Food production series to be offered

The “Backyard Food Production” series will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. beginning April 30.

The series of 12 classes will take place on Tuesday evenings spread throughout the growing season. The series is designed to help grow and preserve more food. Participants will learn how to grow food from design and seed starting to harvest, storage and preservation. Classes are taught by local experts.

The cost is $145 per person or $250 per couple from same household. A registration form is available at http://co.laplata.co.us.

Aztec Ruins to host Earth Day celebration

Aztec Ruins will host the fifth annual “Footprints on the Earth” event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 20.

The event will feature activities that will demonstrate how to minimize impact on the planet by learning from ancestors and exploring new technologies. Many of the booths will provide environmentally friendly activities for families. Admission is free.

Several alternative-fuel vehicles will be on display. Members of the community will teach how to make recycled and Earth-friendly household items. Local food producers and gardeners also will participate. The Haak’u Buffalo Dance Group from Acoma Pueblo will perform. Aztec Ruins will give free packets of native plant seeds.

Visitors also can build their own adobe bricks, lay stone for a core-and-veneer, play games from the modern Pueblo people and participate in a recycling challenge with prizes.

Weminuche Wilderness public forums held

In 2014, the San Juan and Rio Grande National Forests will begin requiring recreationists to register before entering the Weminuche Wilderness.

At these public forums the Forest Service will explain the program and ask for suggestions:

5:30 to 7:30 p.m. April 23 at Durango Community Recreation Center, 2700 Main Ave.

5:30 to 7:30 p.m. April 25 at Silverton Town Hall, 1360 Greene St., Silverton

5:30 to 7:30 p.m. May 2 at the Pagosa Springs Community Center, 451 Hot Springs Blvd., Pagosa Springs.

5:30 to 7:30 p.m. May 7 at the Vallecito Community Center, 17252 County Road 501, Vallecito Lake.
