Hermosa Creek will be topic of open house

The San Juan National Forest will host an open house from 5 to 7 p.m. March 3 at the San Juan Public Lands Center, 15 Burnett Court, to begin discussions about a management plan for the newly created Hermosa Creek Special Management Area.

Introductory remarks will be offered at 5 p.m.

The Hermosa Creek Watershed Protection legislation requires the U.S. Forest Service to complete a management plan within three years for the 70,000-acre Special Management Area. The plan will guide long-term protection and management.

San Juan National Forest staff members will offer information about the natural resources, features and current management issues, including what the legislation says about management of summer and winter recreation, roadless areas, water, minerals and vegetation.

The open house also will begin the National Environmental Policy Act process.

The Forest Service anticipates a series of public meetings and field trips will be offered during the next year. The release of a draft management plan for public review is expected in early 2017, with a final management plan decision by December 2017.

For more information, call Cam Hooley at 884-1414 or email HermosaSMA@fs.fed.us.

Land conservancy seeks accreditation

Amy Schwarzbach, executive director of the La Plata Open Space Conservancy, announces the land conservation organization is applying for renewal of its accreditation status by the national Land Trust Accreditation Commission.

The conservancy originally was awarded accreditation in 2010. Accreditation provides the public assurance the organization has the means to protect important natural places and working lands.

As a part of the process, the accreditation commission invites public comment. Comments must relate to how the conservancy complies with the Land Trust Alliance standards and practices.

To comment, visit www.landtrustaccreditation.org/component/content/article/592; email info@landtrustaccreditation.org; mail to Land Trust Accreditation Commission, Attn: Public Comments, 36 Phila St., Suite 2, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866; or fax (518) 587-3183.

Comments about the application will be most useful if they are received by May 25.
