Hike to explore Cascade Creek

San Juan Mountains Association and San Juan National Forest will offer a hike along Cascade Creek from 9:30 a.m. to noon July 25.

Participants will learn about wildflower blooms and butterflies.

People should meet at the small parking area near the flume on Forest Service Road 783. Carpooling is encouraged.

Participants should be prepared for any kind of weather and bring water, snacks, hat, sunscreen, rain gear and appropriate shoes.

Nature Studies offers walks, fishing, more

Durango Nature Studies will offer these programs:

Weekly Wee Walk Abouts, preschool nature walks, will take place from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesdays through August at the pavilion at Rotary Park. The cost is $5 per child and free for members. No reservations are necessary.

The Durango Nature Center will be open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays through October. The center is free for members and children 12 and younger and $5 for nonmembers.

A fly-fishing workshop will take place from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. July 18 at the nature center. The cost is $10 for nonmembers and free for members. Fly-fisherman Jake West will talk about bugs, fly-tying and fly-fishing tips. Workshop participants will receive free entry to the center.

A family nature workshop will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. July 25 at the nature center. The cost is $10 for nonmembers and free for members. This program is designed for families with 2- to 7-year-old children. Workshop participants will receive free entry to the center.

Learn about local hummingbird program

San Juan Mountains Association will discuss the Hummingbird Monitoring Network from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday in the Dunton area northwest of Cortez.

Participants will learn about the program and watch the volunteers and hummingbirds in action. The discussion is open to all ages.
