Plant walk to identify edibles, medicinals

The Four Corners Broadband, a local chapter of Great Old Broads for Wilderness, will host an ‘Edible & Medicinal Plant Walk” with local naturalist Calida May from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 28 at Haviland Lake.

Participants will explore nature on this two-mile, easy-to-moderate hike and learn to identify wild plants, roots, greens and berries that are edible, medicinal or both. There is a $20 fee.

Mesa Verde birding festival features numerous tours

These events will be part of the Ute Mountain/Mesa Verde Birding Festival to be held in Cortez:

Registration is open for the festival’s Mancos Bed and Breakfast tour May 9. Participants will visit three private properties that offer prime birding habitats.

Two Old Spanish National Historic Trail birding tours will be offered. Participants will travel by van with a local birding expert who also is familiar with the trail route and history. On May 7, the group will visit sites between Cortez and Navajo Lake, and on May 9, they will tour the Great Sage Plain into southeastern Utah.

A tour that visits the lakes and reservoirs within the Cortez area will be available. Participants will travel by van with birding expert Jim Beatty to observe waterfowl, shore birds, gulls and other species.

You can learn about plan for Hermosa Creek

The San Juan National Forest will hold a public meeting from 6 to 8 p.m. May 19 in the Sonoran rooms at the San Juan Public Lands Center, 15 Burnett Court.

The meeting will focus on the preparation of a management plan for the newly created Hermosa Creek Special Management Area. The meeting will continue public scoping for the National Environmental Policy Act process, which is required for preparation of the management plan.

The Forest Service will offer a presentation summarizing the recent legislation, current management and some known issues to be addressed. Possible itineraries for public field trips this summer also will be discussed.

Trails 2000 to throw Join & Renew Party

Trails 2000 will host its annual Join & Renew Party on the national celebration of Earth Day, from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Carver Brewing Co., 1022 Main Ave.

There will be music, and beer and light food will be served. Participants will have the opportunity to meet Dewayne Buratti, who recently joined Trails 2000 as the new trail coordinator.

A free beer will be provided to attendees who join or renew. Trails 2000 will give away swag and the chance to win a Trek District Chelsea Bike.

Nature Studies offers docent training, run

Durango Nature Studies announces these events:

Docent training will take place from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday. Trained docents will spend one or two Saturdays of their choice between May and October greeting people at the Welcome Building at the Nature Center in Bondad. An introduction to early wildflower identification will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 25. Participants will travel to various locations to compare wildflowers at different elevations. The cost is $25 for members and $15 for nonmembers. People will learn the basics of wildflower identification and should bring a picnic lunch. The Earth Day 5K and Family Fun Run Celebration will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 26 at Rotary Park. The cost is $15 in advance, $20 on race day or $10 per family for the 1 mile fun run. After the race, there will be music, free beer and pizza, and a kids’ boat race.
