Preschool nature walks to be held

Durango Nature Studies will offer Weekly Wee Walk Abouts, preschool nature walks, from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesdays through August at Durango’s Rotary Park.

The cost is $5 per child, and free for members. A naturalist will lead activities and a walk along the Animas River Trail. No reservations are necessary.

Mancos State Park announces programs

Mancos State Park, 42545 County Road N in Mancos, will host these programs:

Tim Krebs will sing and play cowboy and gospel tunes at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the park’s amphitheater.

Naturalist Carol Bylsma will offer two nature programs every Saturday. From 10 to 11:30 a.m., she will lead a wildlife walk. Participants should bring binoculars and meet at the entrance gate. From 2 to 3:30 p.m., Bylsma will lead a hike to capture butterflies and other insects. Participants should meet at the Quarry Trailhead on the north side of Jackson Gulch Reservoir.

Bylsma will lead a morning bird walk at 8:30 a.m. every Sunday. Participants will learn bird identification and calls. Participants should bring binoculars and meet at the entry gate.

Aztec Ruins to host lecture Friday evening

Aztec Ruins National Monument will host a lecture at 7 p.m. Friday, in the Visitors Center, 84 Road 2900 in Aztec.

Kathryn Flynn will give a presentation called “The New Deal: The Program in Our New Mexico Parks and the Northwest Corner.”

Flynn specializes in research, documentation and conservation efforts of the many New Deal treasures in New Mexico, including architecture, public art and the Civilian Conservation Corps accomplishments.

Navajo State Park offers activities

Navajo State Park, 1526 County Road 982 in Arboles, will host these programs:

Japanese fish painting known as Gyotaku will take place at 9 a.m. Friday at the Rosa Campground Visitors Service Building. Participants will learn how to use ink and rice paper with real fish and with fish reproductions, including fossil fish.

A nature walk will take place at 9 a.m. Sunday, at the Sambrito Wetlands trailhead in the northwestern section of the park. The hike will feature viewing of a range of ecosystems. Participants should bring water, a day pack and binoculars and wear clothing and footwear suitable for a hike on dirt trails.

Children ages 6 and older are invited to a kite-making and kite-flying event at 9 a.m. June 14 at the Rosa Campground shower building. Materials and instruction will be supplied. Participants will gather at 6 p.m. near Tiffany Campground to fly their kites. To sign up, call 883-2208.

Free fishing clinics for kids ages 12 and younger will be held from 9 a.m. to noon and again from 6 to 7 p.m. Saturday in the handicapped fishing area along the Piedra River on Colorado Highway 151, five miles north of the park visitors’ center. Kids will learn about the basics of casting, lures and bait. All fishing equipment will be provided. Participants should bring water, bug spray and snacks, and wear appropriate clothing and shoes.
