Nature Studies to host Mountainfilm
Durango Nature Studies will host its fifth annual fall fundraiser Mountainfilm on Tour 2014 on Friday at the Smiley Building, 1309 East Third Ave.
The doors will open at 5:30 p.m. and the films will screen at 7 p.m. Tickets are $12 in advance, $15 at the door, $10 for students. Children 12 and younger are free.
Food and drinks from Zia Taqueria, Serious Delights, Steamworks Brewing Co. and 6th Street Liquor will be available for purchase.
Tickets are available at Maria’s Bookshop, Zia Taqueria (north and south), 4 Corners River Sports and Pine Needle Mountaineering.
At 5:30, beer, wine, burritos and desserts will be served. A silent auction also will be held. Food and drinks will be served through the event.
Mountainfilm is one of the premier outdoor film festivals in the country.

Applications sought for gardener program
The Colorado State University Extension Office in La Plata County announces that it is accepting applications for the 2015 Colorado Master Gardener program until Dec. 19.
Students will receive training in tree care, vegetables, soils, native plants, water wise gardening, pruning and more.
The 12-week series of classes will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursdays beginning Jan. 29 at the La Plata County Fairgrounds, 2500 Main Ave.
The cost is $170 for people who intend to volunteer or $530 for a certificate without volunteer time.
Students are responsible for obtaining their own copy of the textbook, The Science of Gardening. The training is equivalent to a four-credit-hour course. Volunteers are expected to complete 50 hours of volunteer time in the first year and 24 hours in subsequent years.
