Seismic study approved for Doe Canyon Deep Unit
The U.S. Forest Service’s Dolores District Ranger and the Bureau of Land Management Tres Rios field manager have approved the KM 3D Seismic Study for the Doe Canyon Deep Unit. The survey will occur across 121 square miles of Forest Service and BLM lands east of Dove Creek. Seismic surveys send sound energy waves into the Earth, and the reflected energy waves are recorded on the surface. They provide an underground geologic profile. The study will include the use of helicopters, portable drill rigs and detonation of explosive charges within shot holes. The project is estimated to begin west of the Dolores River Canyon in July. The survey will progress across BLM lands this summer, and will resume on USFS lands east of the Dolores River canyon in summer 2014. Final decision documents and maps are available at Dolores Public Lands Office, 29211 Colorado Highway 184 in Dolores or at www.fs.usda.gov/goto/sanjuan/projects.
For more information, call Robert Garrigues at 882-7296. Both decisions are subject to appeal. For more information about the appeal process, call Deborah Kill at 882-7296.
