Tour of Fort Lewis herbarium offered

Ross McCauley, professor of biology at Fort Lewis College, will lead a tour of the college’s herbarium from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

McCauley will also introduce participants to various digital data bases that provide a wide range of herbarium data to help with plant identification.

After the herbarium tour, participants will examine specimens of the most common plant families in Southwest Colorado.

This tour is sponsored by the Southwest Chapter of the Colorado Native Plant Society. There is no fee to participate.

CSU Extension Office offers gardening class

The Colorado State University Extension Office in La Plata County will offer its Backyard Food Production series from 6 to 8 p.m. on various Tuesdays beginning May 3 at the La Plata County Fairgrounds Extension Building, 2500 Main Ave.

The series will feature 12 evening classes designed to help people grow and preserve food.

The class is held throughout the food production season from May to September. Classes are taught by local experts. The cost is $130.
