Comments sought on forest project

The Dolores Ranger District of the San Juan National Forest is seeking public comment on the Draft Environmental Impact Statement for the Rico-West Dolores Roads and Trails Travel Management Project.

The project area is north of Dolores and includes the Bear Creek, Taylor Mesa, Calico National Recreation Trail, Bolam Pass and Groundhog Point areas.

Five alternatives address motor-vehicle use on national forest roads and trails.

A public open house is scheduled for 5 to 8 p.m. June 2 at the Dolores Community Center. Forest Service staff will be available to answer questions about the project.

The comment period ends June 20. The DEIS and electronic comment form are available on the San Juan National Forest website, http://1.usa.gov/24uqSfo and at the Dolores Public Lands Office, 29211 Highway 184, Dolores, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, excluding holidays.

Comments may also be submitted in hard-copy format to Dolores Public Lands Office, 29211 Highway 184, Dolores, CO, 81323 or faxed to the office at 882-6841. Comments will become part of the public record.

Peak release set for Navajo Reservoir

The Bureau of Reclamation has scheduled the spring peak release from the Navajo Reservoir.

The agency will begin to increase the release at 1 a.m. Wednesday, reaching 5,000 cubic feet per second May 22 at about 11 a.m. The release will stay at 5,000 cubic feet per second for up to 31 days or until the spring runoff on the Animas River is complete.
