Colorado Water Plan draft to be discussed Wednesday

A public meeting about the draft Colorado Water Plan will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave.

The plan will be presented to Gov. John Hickenlooper by the end of 2014. To gather public comment, members of the Legislature’s Interim Water Resources Review Committee are holding hearings in each of the state’s nine major river basins. This meeting is for the San Juan Basin, including Pagosa Springs, Durango, Bayfield, Ignacio, Dolores, Cortez, Mancos, Silverton and other Southwest Colorado communities.

Navajo State Park to offer astronomy program

An astronomy program will be offered at 8 p.m. Saturday at Navajo State Park, 1526 County Road 982, Arboles.

The event is part of the park’s 50th anniversary celebration Saturday, which will feature an open house at the visitor’s center starting at noon.

The evening program will begin at 8 p.m. with a presentation about the astronomy of the native Navajo people, the original inhabitants of the area. Park naturalist Janet Marie Clawson-Cano will explain Navajo astronomy and constellations and the related rock art panels that have been found in the area’s canyons.

At 9 p.m., astronomer John Buting will present his “Navajo Dark Sky Program” at the Arboles Point Campground. Telescopes will be available, but people are encouraged to bring their own.

Mancos State Park announces events

Mancos State Park, 42545 County Road N, Mancos, will offer these programs:

Park naturalist Carol Bylsma will lead a butterfly and insect walk from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday. Participants will learn to identify, catch and release butterflies and insects.

Bylsma will lead “Wild Games,” where participants will learn about Colorado’s wildlife from 3 to 3:35 p.m. Saturday.

Bylsma will lead another butterfly and insect walk from 10 to 11 a.m. Sunday.
