Event to celebrate Wilderness Act anniversary
The San Juan National Forest has joined with the local community to help celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Wilderness Act with the Walk for Wilderness and Family Fun Fair to be held Sept. 27 at the La Plata County Fairgrounds, 2500 Main Ave.
The Wilderness Walk will begin at the fairgrounds at 9 a.m. and follow the Animas River Trail to Rotary Park and loop back to the fairgrounds. Participants will receive a commemorative pin and branded wood chip celebrating the anniversary. There is no need to register in advance.
Family Fun Fair booths and activities will begin at 10:30 a.m. with music provided by the San Juan String Band. Activities will include a Kids Education Corner and demonstrations of stock packing, primitive tool use, backcountry gear, low-impact river camping and Dutch-oven cooking techniques. There also will be a wilderness backcountry cooking contest. The walk and activities are free, but food and beverages will be for sale.

The 2014 Annual Online Auction will be held from 9 a.m. today to 9 p.m. Sept. 21. To participate, click the auction button at www.durangonaturestudies.org.
A fly-fishing workshop will take place from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Durango Nature Center. The cost is $10 for nonmembers and free for members. Jake West will lead a workshop about basic techniques.
A natural history workshop will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Sept. 20 at the nature center. The cost is $10 for nonmembers, and free for members. Participants will learn about the flora and fauna of the Four Corners and gain a better understanding of the historical and ecological significance of the natural surroundings.
A New Moon Astro-Tour will be held at 8 p.m. Sept. 26 at the nature center. The event is free for members and $10 for nonmembers

Water 101 Seminar to take place in Telluride
The annual Water 101 Seminar will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 22 at the Telluride Town Council Chambers Rebekah Hall, 113 East Columbia Ave. in Telluride.
The seminar will feature qualified speakers, including the keynote speaker Colorado Supreme Court Justice Gregory Hobbs. In addition, representatives from federal, state and local agencies will provide an understanding of water law and related issues in the area.
Continuing-education credits are available for lawyers, real estate agents and Colorado water-utility personnel.
The registration fee is $35 before Monday or $40 afterward and at the door. The registration fee includes lunch, snacks and an information packet. The fee for professionals seeking education credits is $50 before Monday or $60 at the door.

Colt Starting Challenge set for Saturday, Sunday
The Colt Starting Challenge USA will host an event from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday and from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday in the covered arena at the La Plata County Fairgrounds, 2500 Main Ave.
The event will feature horse trainers demonstrating horsemanship skills.
Trainers will work with colts over two days, then will ride the horses through an obstacle course.

Prairie dog control to be discussed Sept. 18
The Southwest Young Farmers Education Association will host the founder of the Rodenator company who will demonstrate a product that exterminates prairie dogs at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 18 at the Oxford Grange, 8 miles west of Ignacio on Colorado Highway 172.
