District 9-R announces administration hours

Durango School District 9-R will have limited hours during the summer starting June 6.

The administration building will be open to the public from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

Durango School District 9-R will host these high school graduation ceremonies:

Title VII Graduation Celebration will be held at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Blue Lake Ranch.Durango High School’s graduation will be held at 7 p.m. Friday in the DHS stadium.Durango Big Picture High School Graduation will be held at 5:30 p.m. June 2 at Rotary Park.

June 2 is last day for all Durango schools

Education center to offer math GED session in June

The Durango Adult Education Center will offer a math GED intensive session from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. June 6-30.

Classes will cover basic algebra, geometry, probability, fractions, decimals and percentages.

Classes offer small class instruction, weekly assessments to chart progress, practice tests and test-taking tips. A free daily lunch will be provided.

The math GED test will be offered July 1.

Fort Lewis Mesa to hold end-of-the-year picnic

The celebration will include a picnic and fun games. Lunch will be available for purchase by parents and community members that attend.

Animas Valley Elementary to hold field day

Animas Valley Elementary School will hold its Olympic Field Day on Wednesday.

There will be potato sack races, a leaky cup relay, the half-pipe team challenge and more.

Florida Mesa Elementary announces events

Florida Mesa Elementary School will hold these events:

The fifth-grade students will show their exhibition projects from 10 to 11:30 a.m. and 1 to 2:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Talent show rehearsal will be held from 2:50 to 4 p.m. Wednesday. The performance will be at 1 p.m. June 1.

Riverview Elementary to hold Talent Show

Riverview Elementary School will hold its Fifth Grade Talent Show at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the Riverview Gymnasium.

This annual event features students playing instruments, singing, dancing and performing a variety of other talents.

Riverview families, students and other community members are welcome to attend.

Gardeners Summer Camp offered in July

The Garden Project of Southwest Colorado will offer Junior Gardeners Summer Camp.

The outdoor summer camp will include weekly local guest experts covering topics from gardening, cooking, pollinators, compost, art and more.

Session 1 will be held July 11-15. Session 2 will be July 18-22. Session 3 will be July 25-29.

The camp will meet from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Needham Elementary School Garden.

Cost is $200 per week. Unlimited scholarships are available.

Escalante announces fall registration dates

Escalante Middle School will host its fall registration Aug. 17-18. The schedule will be:

Aug. 17, registration for grades seven and eight; students new to the district from 3 to 4 p.m., returning students from 4 to 6 p.m.Aug. 18, sixth-grade registration; students new to the district from 3 to 4 p.m., returning students from 4 to 6 p.m.

Miller students studying the Holocaust

For the culminating project, students will be putting together a museum in the Miller Auditorium.

The community is invited to stop by between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Friday. The students will be the “docents.”

Teen Summer Reading Kick-off Party at library

Teens are invited to drop in at Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave., for a special after-hours Summer Reading Kick-off Party from 6 to 7 p.m. June 3.

There will be treats, door prizes and outdoor games. Teens will have a chance to sign up for the Summer Reading Program.

El Pomar supports new Geosciences, Physics and Engineering Hall

El Pomar, a foundation dedicated to promoting the well-being of Colorado’s people, has given $100,000 to Fort Lewis College’s Geosciences, Physics and Engineering Hall.

The hall will greatly enhance the educational and research opportunities for the college and the community.

El Pomar’s funding will support FLC students seeking to unlock the mysteries of the Earth, such as Joseph Mason, a 2016 geology graduate.

Mason’s research was focused on discovering what moved the massive Equity Block near Creede. The Equity Block is a section of rock that formed after the eruption of several massive volcanoes around 27 million years ago.

AHS Graduation rehearsal is from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Friday at the Community Concert Hall; seniors must wear cap and gowns for the class photo. AHS Graduation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday at the Community Concert Hall; families of graduates will have reserved seating and there will be a limited amount of general admission tickets available. Doors open at 3:15 p.m.AHS Advisory Olympics will take place from 8:25 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday at Santa Rita Park.All ninth- through 11th-grade students will complete Transitional Presentations of Learning from May 31-June 2. The final day of school is June 3.
