The Colorado Western Slope College Fair will be held in Aspen on Oct. 4. More than 220 colleges will be in attendance, and there will be workshops about several topics related to the college application process. AHS has received a grant to provide transportation and an overnight stay to 20 students for this event. For more formation, email Jess Adams at collegecounseling@animashighschool.com.
There are a handful of open seats at AHS for ninth, 10th and 11th grades. AHS does not accept transfer students past Sept. 30. For more information or to arrange a visit, email maureen.truax@animashighschool.com.
Park Elementary group invites public to book fair
Park Elementary School’s Parent Teacher Organization will host its semi-annual Scholastic Book Fair from Friday to Oct. 2 in the school’s library.
The fair is open to the public weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and until 3 p.m. Mondays. Participants will need to sign in at the school’s office.
Student exchange program seeks representatives
ASSE International Student Exchange Programs is seeking people to serve as representatives in the community.
ASSE provides academic year and semester exchange programs in the United States for high school students from around the world. Students are 15 to 18 years old and have passed a series of academic and character requirements.
Representatives recruit and screen prospective host families, interview students to study abroad and supervise the exchange students in their community.
Representatives are compensated based on the number of students they are supervising.

SUCAP announces grant award, contract
The Southern Ute Community Action Program’s Youth Services Division announces a renewed grant from the Colorado Department of Education’s 21st Century Community Learning Center and a new five-year contract from the Colorado Department of Health’s Office of Behavioral Health.
These money will support the Club Venture and Curiosity programs offered through SUCAP Youth Services. The programs are provided to Ignacio middle school and high school youth. All programs are free of charge because of these awards.

Ignacio community center to support local groups
The Education Literacy Health & Inspiration (ELHI) Community Center in Ignacio opened Sept. 1 at the site of the former Ignacio Elementary School, which subsequently served as Ignacio High School until August 2015.
ELHI aims to foster collaboration among community-led organizations that serve young people and families. Space will be available for community events and workshops.
The ELHI Association is a Colorado nonprofit established as the tenant management organization that oversees operations and coordinates community use spaces. Anchor tenants are: Dancing Spirit Community Arts Center, Hope Community Christian Academy, Ignacio Community Church, La Plata County Independent Youth Performing Arts, Silver SPRUCE Academy and SUCAP Youth Services.
Open water diver course available at Durango High
Durango High School Scuba Club and Splashdown Diving will offer the PADI Open Water Diver Course.
The course, which provides a lifetime certification, will start Oct. 1, and participants can be finished by Nov. 1.
This is the world’s most popular scuba course.

Durango High to host night for seniors, their parents
Durango High School will host a senior parent and student night at 6 p.m. Thursday.
Participants will learn about senior year and how to apply to colleges and seek scholarships.

The Western Slope College Fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 4 at Aspen High School in Aspen.
The Durango High School counseling office encourages juniors and seniors to attend.

Picture retakes for Durango High School students will be held Oct. 8.
Florida Mesa to host parents of kindergarteners
Florida Mesa Elementary School parents of kindergartners are invited to attend an information session about how to support a child at home.
Sessions will be held from 3 to 4 p.m. and 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Class of 2017, parents to gather at high school
The Durango High School Class of 2017 parent information meeting will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. Oct. 6 in the DHS auditorium.
All DHS juniors and their parents are encouraged to attend.
Flapjack Fundraiser will benefit music club
The Durango Instrumental Music Booster Club will host a Flapjack Fundraiser from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. Oct. 3 at Applebee’s, 800 Camino del Rio.
Tickets are $10 each and must be purchased in advance.

Guest applications due for homecoming dance
Students planning on bringing an out-of-school guest to Homecoming must fill out an Out of School Guest Application, available at the front office or activities office.
The form must be turned in to the Activities Office by Oct. 2. The dance will be held Oct. 17 at the Durango Main Mall.
Tutoring program seeks student volunteers
Homework Heroes, a community program matching high school students with younger students and managed by Mumbling Marmot Tutoring, is seeking additional high school student volunteers.
There is currently a waiting list of young Durango students needing help from older, more experienced students. Average time volunteered is one hour per week. High school volunteers are not paid but do get community service hours for their high school portfolio and may request letters of reference based on their service.
The program is managed as a community service by Yvonna Graham of Mumbling Marmot Tutoring.

Dugdale earns master’s in public administration
Sherri Dugdale of Mancos earned a Master of Public Administration from Valdosta State University.
Dugdale is one of 522 students who completed the requirements of their respective academic programs during the summer semester. Valdosta State University is in Valdosta, Georgia.

Ellen Southworth named to dean’s list at Bates
Ellen Southworth was named to the dean’s list at Bates College for the semester ending in April 2015.
This is a distinction earned by students whose cumulative grade point average is 3.71 or higher. Southworth, the daughter of Scott A. Southworth and Robin L. Lucie of Durango, is a 2012 graduate of Durango High School. She is majoring in mathematics at Bates.
Bates is in Lewiston, Maine.
Student can test skills with PSAT on Oct. 14
Durango High School will offer a PSAT test to interested sophomores and juniors from 8 to 11 a.m. Oct. 14 in the DHS auditorium.
The test is given to inform students about how well they could do on the SAT, AP classes and other college entrance exams. The test is also a qualifier for the National Merit Scholarship Program for Juniors.
There are a limited number of tests available and there is a $15 fee. To sign up and pay, visit the DHS counseling office.
