District 9-R introduces early kindergarten access

Durango School District 9-R offers an early access program for accelerating children into kindergarten whose birthdays fall after Sept. 1.

Elks lodge announces scholarship recipients

The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Durango Lodge announces scholarship recipients.

Audrey Morris of Durango High School will receive a $1,000 Colorado Elks Association Scholarship Grant.Savanna Johnson and Jessica Looman, both of DHS, will receive $1,000 each.Lyle Bryson earned a $1,000 Lodge Scholarship.Nicolas Tarasewicz of Animas High School was awarded a $500 Lodge Scholarship and a $500 Fred Zimmerman Memorial Scholarship.Brooke Bowdridge of Pagosa High School will receive a $1,000 Lodge Scholarship.Miel Diaz of Ignacio High School will receive a $1,000 Lodge Scholarship.The scholarship committee of the Durango Elks Lodge invites 2017 graduating seniors to apply online for the Elks National Foundation Most Valuable Student Scholarship Contest this fall.

Escalante announces fall registration dates

Escalante Middle School will host its fall registration Aug. 17-18. The schedule will be:

Aug. 17, registration for grades seven and eight; students new to the district from 3 to 4 p.m., returning students from 4 to 6 p.m.Aug. 18, sixth-grade registration; students new to the district from 3 to 4 p.m., returning students from 4 to 6 p.m.

Garden Project to run camps at Needham

Aug. 17, registration for grades seven and eight; students new to the district from 3 to 4 p.m., returning students from 4 to 6 p.m.Aug. 18, sixth-grade registration; students new to the district from 3 to 4 p.m., returning students from 4 to 6 p.m.The Garden Project of Southwest Colorado will offer Junior Gardeners Summer Camp.

The outdoor summer camp will include weekly local guest experts covering topics such as gardening, cooking, pollinators, compost, art and more.

Session 1 will be held July 11-15, Session 2, July 18-22 and Session 3, July 25-29.

The camp will meet from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Needham Elementary School Garden.

The cost is $200 per week. Unlimited scholarships are available. Volunteers are needed.
