Durango Arts Center to host art camp
The Durango Arts Center, 802 East Second Ave., will hold its Winter Arts Camp for Kids from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Jan. 1-3.
The camp will be for children ages 6-10. Participants should bring their lunches. All art materials will be provided.
The cost is $40 for members and $55 for nonmembers per day.
The classes offered are: “Explore Collage, Painting and Papermaking” with Kathy Juracka on Jan. 1; “Sculpture Constructions and Drawing” with Meredith Rose on Jan. 2; and “Printmaking, Painting and 3-D” with Juracka and Rose on Jan. 3.

FLC to host winter commencement
Fort Lewis College’s Winter Commencement will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in Whalen Gym.
A post-graduation celebration for alumni will be held in the Student Life Center immediately after the commencement ceremony.
The speaker will be associate professor of psychology Susan Kraus, who earned the college’s Alice Admire Outstanding Teaching Award in 2013.

Mountain Middle announces events
Mountain Middle School will conduct “Presentations of Learning” on Thursday.
Throughout the day, students will speak about the content and skills they have learned in a format that models the professional world.
The Mountain Middle School Board of Directors also will meet at 5 p.m. Thursday.
Local man to graduate from N.M. university
Eastern New Mexico University – Roswell, N.M., announces that Eric L. Lucas of Durango is a fall 2013 graduation candidate.
Lucas is studying emergency medical services.
Both of these events will take place at the school, 108 W. 31st St.

Christian school to perform musical
Columbine Christian School will present “The Night Shift Before Christmas,” a Christmas musical performed by students in grades two to eight, at 6 p.m. today at the school, 1775 Florida Road.
The musical will tell the story of the night shift at the Falafel House as the town of Bethlehem witnesses the birth of the Messiah.
Each show also will include “The Itty Bitty Christmas Pageant” performed by prekindergarteners through first-graders. A potluck reception will be held afterward. Admission is free.

Title VII to host holiday potluck
Title VII Native American Education will host its Holiday Potluck Feast from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. today at La Plata Fairgrounds Extension Building, 2500 Main Ave.
Title VII will provide turkey and roast beef. Participants are asked to bring a side dish to share.
There will be holiday entertainment.
Park kindergartners to host performance
Park Elementary School’s kindergarten classes will celebrate the end of the “By the Sea” unit with a performance at 9 a.m. Thursday in the cafeteria.
Students will sing songs, read poems and recite facts. Parents are invited.
Florida Mesa Elementary to host Spirit Week
Florida Mesa Elementary School is hosting its Spirit Week through Friday.
Students can show their spirit by wearing these items: school colors today; pajamas Thursday; and a crazy holiday sweater Friday.
Federal Student Aid presentation slated
A hands-on help session for completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) application will be held from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Jan. 8 in the Durango High School library.
This event is only for DHS seniors and their families.
To attend:
Apply for a student and parent personal identification number before the event by going to FAFSA.ed.gov. A PIN is an electronic signature. The student and the parent, who will be listed in the FAFSA, must each have a PIN.
People who have not filed their 2013 tax return by this event should bring their 2012 tax returns to use as a guide to estimate 2013 figures in the income section of the FAFSA.
Bring the student’s 2013 W-2s, if he or she has any.
Financial-aid staff members from Fort Lewis College will be on hand to help complete this application online.
9-R superintendent’s office announces hours
The Durango School District 9-R Superintendent’s Office will hold these holiday hours at the administration building, 201 E. 12th St.: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Dec. 30, Jan. 2 and 3.
