Exchange program seeks host families

ASSE International Student Exchange Programs is seeking host families for international high school boys and girls.

These students are 15 to 18 years of age and are coming to this area for the upcoming high school year or semester. They arrive from their home country shortly before school begins and return at the end of the school year or semester.

Each student is fully insured, brings his or her own personal spending money and expects to contribute his or her share of household responsibilities, as well as be included in normal family activities.

Families can choose their students from a variety of backgrounds, nationalities and personal interests.

Arts center announces summer classes

Durango Arts Center, 802 East Second Ave., will offer these summer classes for kids and teenagers:

“Patterned Paper, Prints, Paintings and Pots” will be held from Aug. 4 to Aug. 8. The morning session from 9 a.m. to noon will be for ages 5 to 7, and the afternoon session from 1 to 4 p.m. will be for ages 8 to 11. Students will play with patterned landscapes, texture patterns and printed cloth patterns. The cost is $112.50 for members and $125 for nonmembers.

A teen artist retreat will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 11 to Aug. 13. The cost is $120 for members and $150 for nonmembers. The camp will focus on printmaking processes that include trace monoprints and woodcuts. Denver artist Jennifer Ghormley will cover a brief history of printmaking and the options it entails. Demos, examples, troubleshooting and print quality will be covered.

Fall sports, activities to begin at DHS

To participate in Durango High School fall sports and activities, students must obtain a Red Card.

To receive a card, participants must provide a completed physical/conduct form, completed medical consent form and participation fee to the Activities Office. The Activities Office will accept paperwork and participation fees for Red Cards from July 29 to Aug. 1 and Aug. 6 to Aug. 8.

Fees for 9-R students are:

Individuals are $75.

An individual cap is set at $150.

A family cap is set at $200.

Fees for a non-9-R students:

Individuals are $112.50.

An individual cap is set at $225.

A family cap is set at $300.

Athletes/participants should be prepared to pay the fee when they pick up their cards. Students will not be eligible for participation until fees have been paid. Financial hardship should not be a barrier to participation.

Grants available to child care programs

The Early Childhood Council of La Plata County, a recipient of the Infant and Toddler Quality and Availability Grant (HB 13-1291) and Temple Hoyne Buell Funding, is accepting applications from licensed child care programs (homes and centers) in La Plata County.

Available awards include:

$600 to $1,000 per classroom mini-grants to increase quality care through QRIS ratings and incentives for early care and education providers.

$600 to $1,000 Family Child Care Home Grants to increase infant and toddler slots in La Plata County by offering start-up costs for new family home providers. Prelicensing training and mini-grants available.

Football cheerleading registration to be held

Cheerleading registration for Durango Youth Football will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Durango High School football field.

Participants will receive information and can register to cheer for the 2014 Durango Youth Football season.
