Ignacio schools to honor veterans

Ignacio School District will participate in the GI Go Fund’s “Jeans for Troops” fundraising drive.

The fund helps military veterans gain employment, go to college, access health-care and financial benefits and find housing.

On Nov. 12, employees of the district can pay $5 to wear jeans to work and students can pay $1 to wear hats to school. Proceeds will benefit the GI Go Fund.

The High Expectations Committee of Ignacio School District will host a “Veterans Dinner and Concert” to honor area veterans at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 11 at the Middle School Commons Area, 222 County Road 320, Ignacio.

Dinner will be free, but people must RSVP by Nov. 7 by calling 563-0500 or emailing sarmstrong@ignacio.k12.co.us.

Parenting workshop to be offered Nov. 8

Dan McMannis, founder of Heart Mentors, will lead “Parenting from the Heart” from 1 to 4 p.m. Nov. 8.

This workshop will integrate several practices to help people be the parents they wish to be:

Heart-rhythm practices for restoring connection and optimism.

Multiple intelligences as a lens for discovering and nurturing a child’s greatness.

Emotional acupressure for releasing fears and old emotional baggage.

These tools create a positive shift in people’s perceptions of events; decrease stress and reactivity; and increase communication and emotional availability.

All workshops will be held at YogaDurango Studio, 1485 Florida Road, Building C, No. 201. The suggested donation is $20.

Continuing education available at FLC

Fort Lewis College Continuing Education Program will offer these courses:

“Nonprofit Management: Board Recruitment and Orientation” will be taught by Rich Hoehlein and Paulette Church from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Nov. 5. The class will identify who should be added to a board, what skill sets and which networks are needed and how to be sure to have members who support the mission. The course will cover how to recruit and orient the right people for the right reasons and discuss how to engage them with an organization to maximize their impact on a nonprofit. The cost is $59.

“Drawing for the Artistically Wounded” will be taught by Brenda Macon from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays from Nov. 4 to Nov. 13. The class will be for people who need a perspective shift to improve their art or have had negative art experiences in the past and would like a fresh start with support. Students will be taken through a number of drawing exercises that will stretch their minds and develop their artistic confidence. The cost is $99 for four classes.

AHS students to present dialogues

The 11th-grade humanities students at Animas High School will present “The Morality and Politics of Justice Coffee House Community Dialogues” from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Durango Joe’s, 732 E. College Drive, and from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Durango Joe’s, 40 Town Plaza.

Participants will discuss students’ proposals for how the government should resolve various political issues, not based on what Democrats or Republicans espouse, but based on what is morally and politically just.

DHS accountability panel to meet

The Durango High School Accountability Committee invites the public to attend its meetings.

The committee is responsible for ensuring that school budgets, spending, safety and academic performance is the best it can be. The committee reviews budgets, student data and provides input to ensure procedures benefit all students.

The committee meets from 4:15 to 5:15 p.m. the first Thursday of the month in the DHS library.

Park students to sell coffee by Desert Sun

Park Elementary School will raise money for the school by selling Desert Sun Coffee from Monday through Nov. 14.

Orders will be taken by Park students. The cost is $11 per bag. Choices will include two types of regular roasts and one decaf blend.

Park to host family movie night Nov. 14

Park Elementary School will host its family movie night at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 14 in the cafeteria.

The movie will be “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs,” and a spaghetti dinner will be served.

Halloween party set for Fort Lewis Mesa

Fort Lewis Mesa Elementary School will host its Halloween Carnival on Saturday.

Dinner will start at 5:30 p.m., and a costume contest will be held at 5:40 p.m. The event will feature games and a “Little Red Riding Hood Haunted House” from 6 to 8:30 p.m.

Durango schools to be closed Friday

All Durango School District 9-R schools will be closed Friday for a professional development day.

Big Picture to host haunted house

Durango Big Picture High School will host its third annual haunted house from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday.

Tickets are $5 at the door, $3 with a student ID and $1 will be taken off the ticket price for anyone who makes a donation of canned goods to the school’s food drive. This haunted house is only for kids 9 years old and older.

Durango High issuing red cards for athletics

Durango High School is collecting participation fees and issuing red cards to participants in winter athletics.

Winter sports will begin Nov. 12. They include boys basketball, girls basketball, girls swimming and wrestling.

To receive a red card, athletes need a completed physical/conduct form, completed medical consent form and a participation fee must be brought to the Activities Office.

The red card allows athletes to tryout and participate in DHS athletics.

The Activities Office will accept paperwork and participation fees to issue red cards through Nov. 11.

The fees for 9-R students are $75 per student, with a $150 individual cap and a $200 family cap. The fees for non-9-R students are $112.50 per student with a $225 individual cap and a $300 family cap.

Athletes should be prepared to pay the fee when they pick up their red card. Students will not be eligible for participation until fees have been paid.

Family financial hardship should not be a barrier to participation. If assistance is needed, call Dave Preszler at 259-1630, ext. 2302.

Riverview Elementary to host book fair

Riverview Elementary School will host a Scholastic Book Fair from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. today and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday in the school’s Media Center.

People will need to sign in at the school office before going to the fair.

Riverview to host parent conferences

The Riverview Elementary School parent-teacher conferences will be held from 3:15 to 5:45 p.m. Thursday and from 8 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. Friday.

Animas Valley offering parenting class

Animas Valley Elementary will offer a “Love and Logic” parenting class from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays from Nov. 5 to Dec. 19 in the counselor’s room.

The class is $35 for single parents or $40 per couple, which includes a parent handbook, creative play child care and snacks. Scholarships are available on an as-needed basis. People must register by Friday.
