Bayfield Early Education Programs will be taking applications for the 2016-17 preschool year Friday.
Children must be at least 3 years old and potty trained to attend. Families may choose full or half-day classroom attendance, an after-school program and a Friday enrichment class. The school is in session for nine months and follows the Bayfield School District calendar.
BEEP offers 20 Colorado Preschool Program slots for children who are educationally at risk. This program is available to qualifying 4-year-olds who are going on to kindergarten the next year.
Parents with moderate or low incomes may qualify for tuition assistance through a variety of programs.

Colorado Lt. Gov. Joe Garcia will give the commencement address at Fort Lewis College’s Spring Commencement.
To better accommodate the graduates, two commencement ceremonies will be held April 30, the first at 8:30 a.m. and the second at 11:30 a.m. The ceremonies will be in Whalen Gymnasium and will feature Garcia.

Mountain Middle School announces that the Charter School Institute approved its application for expansion to include grades four and five beginning with the 2017-18 academic year.
Earlier this year, the school reached an agreement with the city of Durango to expand its building on west 31st Street by about 5,000 square feet to provide additional classroom, administrative, project and exhibition space.
Mountain will open grades four and five in August 2017 with enrollment capped at 30 students per grade. At this time, the school is accepting enrollment forms.

Ignacio Elementary School announces registration for incoming kindergarten students for the 2016-17 school year.
The school will host a visit for Southern Ute Head Start preschool students at 10 a.m. Wednesday. All other kindergarten-age students and their parents are also welcome to attend at this time.
Placement testing will take place from 8 a.m. to noon May 23 and from noon to 4 p.m. May 24 at the school for students enrolling in kindergarten for the 2016-17 school year.

Local high school juniors Jenna Engelken, Delaney Kuhns and Miranda Talbot have been selected by La Plata Electric Association to participate in the Colorado Electric Education Institute Cooperative Youth Leadership Camp, an all-expense paid educational/leadership camp set for July 17-22 at Glen Eden Resort outside of Steamboat Springs.
Engelken is a junior at Durango High School and a member of the National Honor Society, National Art Honor Society, varsity tennis team, the DHS band, DECA and the Mayor’s Youth Advisory Commission, among other activities. She intends to study chemistry.
A junior at Pagosa Springs High School, Kuhns is involved with the Future Business Leaders of America, Student Council as well as the jazz/concert band and cross country and track teams. She is also a member of the National Honor Society. She plans to focus on the sciences in her college career.
Talbot is a junior at Bayfield High School. A member of the National Honor Society, she is active in a variety of athletics, including varsity volleyball where she is team captain. She has also led a number of school committees, including prom organization. Her subject of choice is math.

The spring 2016 graduating students in Fort Lewis College’s Teacher Education Department will host their professional exhibition April 28 in the Student Union Ballroom.
Students will share artifacts, written reflections and discuss their growth as professionals.
A reception will begin at 5 p.m. with refreshments and a live performance from the local band Elder Grown.
Afterward, there will be two sessions of individual presentations by this spring’s student teachers.
These presentations will address one or both of these questions: “What is my work?” and “Who am I as a teacher?”
The Stillwater Music Summer All Stars band is accepting applications for the 2016 summer tour.
The band is a select group of students who play alongside faculty members. This group performs during the summer months in the Four Corners.
The group will begin rehearsing June 7 to prepare a one-hour set of jazz, funk and Latin tunes.
Performances will include Bill Teetzel’s art studio in Dolores, two dates at James Ranch, the La Plata County Fair and two dates at the Telluride Jazz Festival, including a return performance on the main stage.

Durango High School Troupe 1096 is raising money for the International Thespian Competition this summer.
Troupe members are leading workshops at DHS for students in fifth to eighth grade. Workshops include acting, musical theater, improv and technical theater.
Workshops will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. April 23 and April 30. The cost for the workshop is $25 and includes a pizza lunch.
