DHS to host meetings about college planning

Durango High School invites parents and students to these college-planning meetings:

“How to Pick a Good College” will take place from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday in the DHS library. This will be an in-depth meeting about best college fit.

“College Essay Writing” will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. Oct. 3 in the DHS library. This program will cover the tips and tricks to help people write a successful college essay.

“How to Prepare for College and Beyond” will take place from 6 to 7 p.m. Oct. 20 in the DHS library. Freshmen and sophomores will learn what they can do now to better prepare for their future. The group will discuss what colleges look for, local resources and tips and tricks to succeed in school and beyond.

Escalante reschedules open house to Oct. 2

The Escalante Middle School Open House has been rescheduled to 5 to 7:30 p.m. Oct. 2.

A barbecue will take place from 5 to 6 p.m. A meet-and-greet with the teachers will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. TCAP results will be available to pick up from 6 to 7:30 p.m. TCAP information sessions will be available as well as a question-and-answer session with counselors.

Florida Mesa to host parents’ reading night

Florida Mesa Elementary School will host its Kindergarten Parents’ Reading Night from 3 to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in the library.

District 9-R school board reschedules meeting

The Durango School District 9-R School Board’s Sept. 23 meeting has been postponed until Oct. 7.

The meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m. in the board room at the Durango School District 9-R Office, 201 E. 12th St.

All district 9-R schools won’t be in session Monday

All schools in Durango School District 9-R will be closed Monday for a professional-development day.

Candidates to discuss views about education

The Durango Education Foundation will host a candidates’ forum focusing on education with state Rep. Mike McLachlan and candidate and former state representative J. Paul Brown from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 14 in the Extension Building at the La Plata County Fairgrounds, 2500 Main Ave.

The formal forum will run from 6:15 to 7 p.m. with time afterward for people to speak with the candidates. McLachlan and Brown will answer questions about education issues facing Colorado schools. The scope will include prekindergarten through post-secondary education. All voters in the 59th District are invited.

Early Childhood Council announces training

The Early Childhood Council of La Plata County announces an upcoming training called “Screening with the Ages and Stages Questionnaire (ASQ-3) and The Ages and Stages Questionnaire: Social Emotional (ASQ:SE) in a Quality, Coordinated System of Care.”

The training will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 18 at the Early Childhood Council Training Room, 130 Rockpoint Drive, Suite C.

Participants will learn how to administer, score and interpret the ASQ-3 and ASQ:SE developmental screening tools; how to refer families to the appropriate agencies; and how to discuss follow-up activities. Participants also will discuss the importance of a quality, coordinated approach to standardized developmental screening, referral and follow-up.

The cost is $10 per participant. The registration deadline is Oct. 10.

Bookmark contest deadline is Oct. 1 for students

The deadline for submissions to the Bookmark Contest sponsored by the Friends of the Durango Public Library is Oct. 1.

The contest is open to all students from elementary through high school. A Kindle Paperwhite will be awarded to the winner in each of two categories: elementary/middle school and high school.

Contestants should create an illustration accompanied by a relevant book or quote. Artwork must be capable of size reduction for bookmark production. A total of 2,500 bookmarks of each of the two winning entries will be printed. Artists’ names and schools will be printed on the bookmarks.

Applications with complete rules are available at all schools and at the front desk of Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave. All bookmark artwork with quotes should be given to librarians at the front desk no later than Oct. 1.

Friends of the Library will announce the winners Oct. 10.

Music in the Mountains offers student scholarships

Music in the Mountains Goes to School is offering Shining Star Scholarships to student musicians in the Durango area.

These scholarships help defray the cost of private music instruction for students who show musical potential for a particular instrument. Financial need is important for awarding these scholarships, but is not the only criterion.

Powerhouse Science Center announces programs

The Powerhouse Science Center, 1333 Camino del Rio, will offer these programs:

The 2014/2015 Community Cinema season will begin Oct. 1 with “Makers: Women In Space.” This film highlights women’s contributions and accomplishments, while acknowledging barriers that women faced and continue to face in this male-dominated field. A panel discussion with space professionals including Laura Peticolas, a physicist at University of California-Berkeley’s Space Sciences Laboratory, will be held after the movie. Doors will open at 6 p.m.

Pub Science will feature “Native Universe: Navajo Skies” on Oct. 3. Navajo scientists Nancy Maryboy and David Begay of the Indigenous Education Institute will present a Navajo, or Diné, understanding of the cosmos. Doors will open at 6 p.m.

Robot Rumpus will take place Oct. 4. This is a robotic-themed cocktail party that will feature interactive robotic stunts and demonstrations, live music and DJ, specialty drinks and more. Tickets are $20 ($25 at the door) per person, 21 and older.

The UV Color Splash 5K will be held Oct. 10 at Three Springs Plaza. This is a family friendly run/walk on which people will be sprayed with 100-percent nontoxic colored UV water at multiple stations along the 5K course. Packet pickup will begin at 5 p.m. and the Color Splash will start at 7 p.m. The cost is $40 per person. To register, visit www.uvsplashcolordash.com.

“Tough Men in Hard Places” will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Oct. 26. This event will include a showing of La Plata Electric Association trucks and equipment and a guided tour of the Powerhouse. Author Esther Greenfield will give a presentation, answer questions and sign copies of her book Tough Men in Hard Places.

Continuing-education classes to be held at FLC

Fort Lewis College’s Continuing Education Program will host these classes:

“Professional Development Program: Employee Track – Becoming a Valued Employee,” taught by P4 Consulting instructors Ellen Babers and Mark Rowland, will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Oct. 4 and from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesdays from Oct. 22 to Nov. 12. This program delivers foundational skills and knowledge for frontline employees and provides the framework and skills to become truly engaged with the company. This 16-hour professional training is $1,100. The registration deadline is Oct. 3.

“NPM: Making a Difference,” an eight-class series, will take place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesdays from Oct. 1 to Nov. 19. Classes can be taken separately for $59 each, or as a series for $354.
