Animas High School announces programs

Animas High School will offer these programs:

The Parent Advisory Committee will meet from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Tuesday at Carver Brewing Co., 1022 Main Ave. All parents are welcome to attend to hear about what’s happening at school, share ideas and learn more about how to get involved.

The AHS Board of Directors will meet from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Sept. 9 on campus.

There will be no school Monday for Labor Day or Sept. 14, when staff members will have a professional development day.

The all-school picnic will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Sept. 18 at Rotary Park. All families are invited to attend this potluck-style gathering, which is a celebration of the start of the school year. For more information, email Ashley Hein at development@animashighschool.com.

Arts center offers fall performing arts

The Durango Arts Center will present its new DAC Applause! performing art offerings featuring Story Book Ballet/Creative Movement for 3- to 5-year-olds from 2 to 2:45 p.m. Mondays from Sept. 14 to Dec. 14.

Students will develop balance, grace and coordination as they explore dance creatively through story and music.

Students will act and dance as their favorite character from stories such as Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty and 12 Dancing Princesses. Costumes are welcome. The cost is $144 for center members and $160 for nonmembers.

DAC Applause! also offers Story Book Ballet/Pre-Ballet for 5- to 7-year-olds from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Wednesdays from Sept. 9 to Dec. 16.

After students begin class with a ballet-based warm-up, students will play their favorite character from famous ballets.

Some ballets include “Beauty and the Beast,” “Swan Lake” and “The Nutcracker.” Costumes are welcome. The cost is $156 for center members and $174 for nonmembers.

Students can enroll in ‘After School Art’

The Durango Arts Center will offer an “After School Art” program in all Durango School District 9-R elementary schools to cultivate children’s individual creativity through visual arts, writing and drama.

The program will develop creative thinking, self-expression and problem-solving skills.

Class size is limited to 12 students to ensure personalized attention. The program meets Colorado’s education standards.

Mountain Middle School to host open house

Mountain Middle School will host an open house for all parents from 5 to 6 p.m. Thursday.

Mesa Verde invites fourth-graders to park

Mesa Verde National Park invites all fourth-grade students to visit the park for free as part of the White House’s new Every Kid in a Park program.

Fourth-grade students can visit www.everykidinapark.gov to complete an activity and obtain a free annual entry pass to more than 2,000 federal recreation areas, including national parks.

Mesa Verde offers a variety of activities that fourth-graders and their families can enjoy, including ranger-guided tours of the cliff dwellings, bicycling on Wetherill Mesa, a self-guided junior ranger activity and wildlife viewing.

The pass is good for free entry at national parks and other federal public lands and waters across the country through Aug. 31, 2016.

The School Based Heath Centers at Durango High School and Florida Mesa Elementary School will offer full immunization services.

DHS Scuba Club to offer diving course

The Durango High School Scuba Club and Splashdown Diving will offer the PADI Open Water Diver course, which is the world’s most popular scuba course.

The course will start Oct. 1 and participants can be finished by Nov. 1.

Durango School District announces school closures

All schools in Durango School District 9-R will be closed Monday in observance of Labor Day.

All schools will also be closed Sept. 14 for professional development.

Run, walk to benefit Native American program

The Spirit Runners 5K/1 Mile Fund Run/Walk for Durango School District 9-R’s Title VII Native American Education Program will be held at 9 a.m. Nov. 15 at Rank Park located behind Durango High School.

This will be a fundraiser to buy Native American children’s books and support the Title VII program.

Literacy center announces openings for students

Grazda Center for Literacy and the Arts has limited tutoring openings for students who need assistance with literacy, especially reading and writing.

Most reading students gain one to two years in reading level in 10 to 12 hours of tutoring at the center.
