Local students study abroad through FLC

These local students studied abroad through the International Programs Office at Fort Lewis College:

Local Milo Johnson completes internship

Milo Johnson of Durango successfully completed Colby-Sawyer College’s internship requirement this summer at National Geographic TV in Washington, D.C.

Johnson is majoring in interdisciplinary studies. Internships are field experiences designed to provide a student learning opportunity under collaborative supervision between Colby-Sawyer College faculty, staff, and work site professionals. Internships offer the opportunity for students to enhance their academic programs with work experience related to career interests in all industry areas in national and international settings. Colby-Sawyer College is located in New London, New Hampshire.

Local students named to deans list

These students were named to the University of Dallas dean’s list for the Spring 2014 semester for earning a semester grade point average of 3.5 or higher:

Danielle Pajak, an economics major from Pagosa Springs.

Local students receive master of social work

The Graduate School of Social Work at the University of Denver recently conferred master’s degrees for 22 graduates of the Four Corners Master of Social Work in Durango.

La Plata County graduates are: Rachel Alber, Jennifer Berkman, Caitlin Delich, Emily Campbell, Dwight Kasuse, Erica Keter, Gina Kramer, Britney Meiers, Megan Roundy, Jeremiah Scott, Scott Smith, Jason St. Mary, Melinda Rousset, Christopher Taylor, Jennifer Turner and Maria Vaughn. The Dean Catherine F. Alter Merit Award was presented to Turner.

Operated in partnership with the Colorado Department of Human Services, Fort Lewis College, Southwest Colorado Community College and Four Corners community agencies, the program enables students to earn the MSW degree in or near their home communities.

Through a cooperative degree program, FLC undergraduates majoring in anthropology, psychology or sociology can earn both their Bachelor of Arts and Master of Social Work degrees in five years.

Mountain Middle names board members

Mountain Middle School welcomes these new board members:

Leigh Bright has joined the board to lead marketing and PR initiatives. Bright has a marketing and advertising background with experience in multiple countries working on both established major brands and successful internet startups. She earned her degree in advertising from San Diego State University, and holds an International MBA from Thunderbird.

Perry Solheim, PhD also has joined the board as treasurer. Solheim has a double degree in philosophy and economics from Claremont McKenna College, a degree in accounting from Fort Lewis College and a PhD from the University of Utah. Perry is an accounting assistant professor at FLC and brings several years of training, education and experience in nonprofit financial management to the school.

Bayfield preschool earns Qualistar rating

Qualistar Colorado announces that Bayfield Early Education Programs, the nonprofit preschool in Bayfield, has earned a 3 STAR Qualistar Rating™.

The Qualistar Rating™ measures the quality of early learning programs through an evaluation of their learning environment, family partnerships, training and education, adult-to-child ratios and group size, and accreditation. Points are earned in each of these areas and are added together to arrive at a 1- to 4-Star rating. Each program also is presented with a detailed plan outlining specific steps for continued quality improvement.

The mission of Bayfield Early Education Programs is to provide a safe, nurturing and stimulating environment which promotes individual growth, inspires curiosity and helps develop positive social skills that help all children be successful in life. BEEP is still accepting applications for three to five year olds to attend preschool.
