Taylor Graham named to dean’s list
Taylor Graham, a resident of Durango and a emerging media major in the class of 2016, was named to the dean’s list at Ithaca College’s Roy H. Park School of Communications for the spring 2013 semester.
Ithaca College is in Ithaca, N.Y.
FLC team earns academic distinction
Fort Lewis College earned the inaugural Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Brechler Award for women’s basketball.
The conference recognized teams with the top grade-point averages in each of the conference’s sports.
These local students were part of the Skyhawk squad that posted a 3.48 grade point average in 2012-13: Katerina Garcia of Durango; Brooklynn DuCharme of Pagosa Springs; and Mary Brinton of Pagosa Springs.
The award is named after Paul W. Brechler, the first commissioner of the RMAC, who along with his wife, Wanda, were the first inductees into the RMAC Hall of Fame.
Grades were used from the 2012-13 school year. Only student-athletes who used a season of competition were counted.
Durango Arts Center offers summer camps
Durango Arts Center, 802 East Second Ave., will offer these camps:
“Around the World in Five Days,” for children ages 5 to 7, will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Monday to Friday from Aug. 5 to 9. The cost is $125 per session. Participants will learn about totem poles from the Pacific Northwest, Australian bark painting, Chinese printmaking, mosaics from the Middle East and the art of Africa.
“Learn to Draw Realistically,” for children ages 10 to 14, will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Monday to Friday from Aug. 5 to 9. The cost is $90 per session. Participants will learn how to use contour lines to create shape and how to use shading to create form. They also will learn about the various perspective tools used in realism.
“Teen Artist Retreat,” for children ages 12 to 17, will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday to Friday from Aug. 12 to 16. The cost is $225 per session. The camp will focus on screen printing and ceramics.

Families needed to host exchange students
ASSE International Student Exchange Programs is seeking host families for international high school boys and girls.
These students are 15 to 18 years of age, and are coming to this area for the upcoming high school year or semester.
The exchange students arrive shortly before school begins and return at the end of the school year or semester.
Each student is fully insured, brings his or her own personal spending money and expects to contribute to his or her share of household responsibilities, as well as being included in normal family activities and lifestyles.

Animas High School announces events
Animas High School’s main office is closed for the summer.
The school’s summer switchboard will handle all inquires and messages at 247-2474.
Parents need to attend these mandatory parent-orientation nights from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in Room 130 of Noble Hall at Fort Lewis College: Ninth grade, Aug. 6; 10th grade, Aug. 8; 11th grade, Aug. 13; and 12th grade, Aug. 15.
Parents should bring their son or daughter. During the event, participants will meet AHS faculty and staff members, learn about the College Counseling Department and curriculum, review AHS policies and procedures and more.
Parents with more than one student at AHS, should try to attend each appropriate event as some information will be grade-specific.
