Crow Canyon offers archaeology camps
Students participating in Crow Canyon’s Middle School Archaeology Camp, High School Archaeology Camp and High School Field School excavate alongside archaeologists in the field, analyze artifacts in the lab, visit archaeological sites and discover the cultural history of the ancestral Puebloans of the American Southwest.
The camps offer an opportunity for students at the precollege level to perform on-site archaeological work. Archaeology camp students will work at the Dillard site, Crow Canyon’s current excavation site and the focus of the center’s Basketmaker Communities Project. The site is an ancestral Puebloan community center dating from the Basketmaker III period (A.D. 500–750), a time of rapid population growth and social and technological change.
Scholarships are available, including several for local and Native American students. Scholarship application deadlines are approaching.

Junior College Night, called “Into the Wild: Finding the Right College Fit,” will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. April 15 in the Commons Room at AHS. The AHS college advising team will discuss the college admissions process, creating a college list, testing and the importance of the college visit. Parents are encouraged to attend.
Education foundation begins fundraising effort
Durango School District 9-R is facing a $1.67 million budget shortfall for the 2014-15 school year, and the Durango Education Foundation is inviting the community to help fill the funding gap by running the Community Action for Education Campaign from now through May 15. The foundation will host several events to raise needed funds.
On April 10, the foundation will host the CAFÉ Dinner at the DoubleTree Hotel, 501 Camino del Rio. The program will feature keynote speaker Michelle Pearson, the 2011 Colorado Teacher of the Year, as well as highlights of 9-R programs. The cost is $75 per person or $600 for a table of eight. An anonymous donor has pledged to match up to the first $50,000 raised at the dinner.
School tours led by 9-R school board member Kim Martin and Durango Education Foundation board vice president Jean Thweatt will be held April 15, 16 and 17. Guests will visit 9-R schools.
Donors can choose from the CAFÉ Giving Opportunities Menu online. Gifts can be directed to several categories. Donors also may opt to support a specific grade level or school. All money raised in this campaign will go directly to the schools.

Scholarship available to Durango students
The Durango Education Foundation is offering a new scholarship, the Joseph Philpott Fine Art Scholarship, which is open to applicants pursuing higher education in any field of visual fine arts.
The $3,000 award will go to a 2014 graduate of a Durango School District 9-R high school or to a 2013 9-R graduate who took a single gap year.

Continuing-education classes available at FLC
Fort Lewis College Continuing Education Program will offer these courses:
“Basics of eBay Selling” will be held the evenings of April 15 and 16 by Olen Batchelor, an eBay PowerSeller and registered trading assistant. This workshop will include eBay University training materials and cover selling, including research, opening and using a PayPal account, improving listings with better descriptions and digital photography, security and post-sale activities such as billing and shipping. The cost is $99 for two classes plus $19.95 for an optional workbook.
“French for Travelers” with Debi Marti will take place Tuesday and Thursday evenings from April 15 to May 1. Students will learn vocabulary, pronunciation and familiarity with ordering in restaurants, booking hotels, asking directions and using public transportation. The cost is $129 for six classes.

Common Grounds Café to host grand opening
The Common Grounds Café will have its grand opening at noon Friday in the foyer area of Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave.
The café is a Durango School District 9-R/San Juan Board of Cooperative Educational Services joint venture that supports students with disabilities transitioning from school to work.
The café serves fresh coffee, lattes and pastries every day. Free drip coffee is available to people who join the grand opening ceremony.
Grace Preparatory accepting applications

Grace is a private, college preparatory high school and a member of the National Association of University Model Schools.

The Liberty School to hold visitors day
The Liberty School, 215 E. 12th St., will host a visitors day from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 10.

Early Learning Center to host fundraising event
The Durango Early Learning Center will host its annual fundraising event and art extravaganza from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Lost Dog Bar & Lounge, 1150 Main Ave.
Admission is $10 for adults includes a beer and appetizers. Admission for children older than 2 is a $2. Children’s art will be available for sale. There will be a photo booth and music by Courage for Lion.

Park Elementary School to host Book Fair Kickoff
Park Elementary School will host its Book Fair Kickoff on Friday with a Family Dinner & Movie Night.
Dinner will be at 5 p.m. and include hot dogs, chili dogs, chili bowls, Frito pies and salad. The movie will start at 6 p.m. Participants should bring blankets and lawn chairs.
The book fair will run from Friday to April 11 in the library.
