District 9-R to discuss graduation guidelines

Durango School District 9-R will host a meeting about graduation guidelines at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Durango High School library.

New graduation requirements that will go into effect for the class of 2020 will be discussed.

Parents of incoming DHS freshman (current eighth-graders) as well as the entire community are invited to attend.

Adult Education Center invites public to graduation

The Durango Adult Education Center will hold its GED graduation ceremony at 6 p.m. May 25 at the Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave.

The commencement speaker will be Gabriella Perky, a 2009 GED graduate and graduate of Fort Lewis College with a degree in business management.

The mission of the Durango Education Center is to fill educational gaps by equipping adults, children and families with the skills and knowledge necessary for 21st-century careers, post-secondary education, and social and economic mobility.

DHS French Club to hold garage sale as fundraiser

The Durango High School French Club will be holding a garage sale from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday in the DHS parking lot.

Proceeds from the sale will help the club’s members travel this summer.

Ignacio FFA Chapter offers catfish, more as fundraiser

The Ignacio FFA Chapter will hold its biannual Rocky Mountain Oyster and Catfish Fry from 5:30 to 11 p.m. Saturday at the Spring Creek Hall. The cost for the dinner and dance is $15 and $10 for children younger than 10. The cost for the dance only is $5 per person.

There will be music by Wild Country and a pie auction. The menu will include Rocky Mountain oysters, catfish, coleslaw, beans, rolls, dessert, tea and lemonade.

Proceeds will benefit the Ignacio FFA Chapter. This is a tobacco and alcohol free event.

Students earn scholarships for construction pursuits

Lisa Laughlin, executive officer of the Home Builders Association of Southwest Colorado, is proud to announce the awards of two $1,000 and four $2,000 scholarships to graduates of local high schools who are pursuing post-secondary education in the construction industry.

Andrew Morgan of Mancos High School has been awarded a $1,000 scholarship to Western Wyoming Community College to study welding.Kaden Taulli of Bayfield High School has been awarded a $1,000 scholarship to San Juan Community College to study welding.Boyd Matheson of Durango High School has been awarded a $2,000 scholarship to Northern Arizona University to study construction design.Domi Frideger of Animas High School has been awarded a $2,000 scholarship to study sustainable design.Garrett Moore of Animas High School has been awarded a $2,000 scholarship to Grand Canyon University to study engineering.Tristan Govreau of Animas High School has been awarded a $2,000 scholarship to University of Colorado-Boulder to study sustainable construction design.For more information, call Lisa Laughlin at 382-0082.

Animas High School announces these events:

The Senior Celebration will be held Tuesday from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the DoubleTree Hotel. Families, friends and community members are encouraged to attend this event, which is designed to recognize the contributions and support the AHS Class of 2016 has received from our community.

Local organizations will present scholarships, and the school will present the Senior Celebration book, a full-color keepsake that features each graduate’s high school highlights and future plans.

There will be light appetizers and a cash bar. Seniors will receive caps and gowns and graduation ceremony tickets.

The Senior Supper will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. May 26 at AHS. This event is just for seniors and staff members – it’s their last time to gather and appreciate one another the night before graduation. The Advisory Olympics will be held from 8:25 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. May 27 at Santa Rita Park.Graduation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. May 27 at the Community Concert Hall. The doors open at 3:30 p.m.

The free app, called “CO Play & Learn,” was created by Colorado librarians through a grant from the Boulder Library Foundation and financial support from numerous libraries. Cooperating Libraries in Consortium includes the Pine River Library.

The app is available for free download for iOS and Android devices through the iTunes store and Google Play.
