Stowers named to chancellor’s list

Cooper Stowers, son of Michael and Bridget Stowers of Durango, has been named to the chancellor’s list for the Fall 2014 semester at Chapman University.

Students must maintain a GPA of 3.6 or higher in at least 12 credits of residence course work taken for a letter grade.

Cooper is enrolled in Chapman’s Dodge College of Film and Media Arts.

Haley Stencel named to dean’s list

Haley A. Stencel of Durango, was named to the dean’s list for the fall 2014 semester at Samford University’s Cumberland School of Law.

To qualify for the honor, a student must have earned a minimum 3.0 grade point average out of a possible 4.0 while attempting at least 10 credit hours of coursework.

Samford University is in Birmingham, Alabama.

Local receives Dreamstarter grant

Olympic gold medalist Billy Mills announces the first class of Native American youths to receive $10,000 Dreamstarter grants for projects that help them bring their dreams to life.

Each of the 10 Dreamstarter recipients, who are all Native American youths under age 30, will work together with a community nonprofit on a project to increase wellness supported by Running Strong for American Indian Youth. Noah Blue Elk Hotchkiss, 16, of Durango, is one of this year’s 10 recipients.

Blue Elk Hotchkiss is Southern Ute/Southern Cheyenne/Caddo and his mentor organization will be Disabled Sports USA – Adaptive Sports Association.

Running Strong will give away 50 $10,000 Dreamstarter grants over the next five years to support Native American youths’ dreams for their communities. At the end of the grant period, Running Strong will choose five projects to be eligible for an additional $50,000 grant. Each year, grants are awarded to projects around a unifying theme. The 2015-2016 theme is wellness.
