Classes will be available to child care providers

The Early Childhood Council of La Plata County, in collaboration with Southwest Colorado Child Care Resource & Referral, will offer classes for people who want to become licensed in-home child care providers in Colorado.

Pre-licensing will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Jan. 11 and 18 at Early Childhood Council of La Plata County, 130 Rockpoint Drive, Suite C. The cost for the two-day class is $50.

Federal aid application to be discussed Jan. 8 at DHS

A hands-on help session for completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid application will be held from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Jan. 8 at the Durango High School library.

This event is only for DHS senior students and their families.

Those attending will need to:

Apply for a student and parent personal identification number before the event by going to FAFSA.ed.gov. A PIN is an electronic signature. The student and the parent, who will be listed on the FAFSA, must each have a number.

Bring a tax return. If participants have not filled out a 2013 tax return by this event, they should bring their 2012 tax returns to use as a guide to estimate their 2013 figures in the income section of the FAFSA.

Bring the student’s 2013 W-2s, if he or she has any.

Financial aid staff members from Fort Lewis College will be on hand to help complete the application online.

Fort Lewis Mesa Elementary receives award from state

Fort Lewis Mesa Elementary School has been honored with the Governor’s Distinguished Improvement Award by the Colorado Department of Education.

These awards are given to schools that demonstrate exceptional student growth.

Fort Lewis Mesa students exceeded expectations for growth in writing and mathematics last year.

They also exceeded expectations in narrowing their growth gaps, which is the measure for students who are underperforming their peers based on gender, socio-economic status or social/developmental needs.

The school also met the state performance framework expectations in reading. The CDE presented the awards in Denver on Dec. 3.

DHS After Prom seeking volunteers for April weekend

The Durango Community After Prom Association, a nonprofit organization devoted to providing a fun and safe all-night event for Durango High School juniors and seniors to enjoy after prom, is seeking volunteers.

Prom weekend will be April 5 and 6. Volunteers are needed for decorating and setup; coordinating or staffing an activity station; collecting prizes; security; check-in, check-out; coat check; food; the casino; clean-up; and for working on committees such as prizes, fundraising and more.

Students urged to take college prerequisites

For students interested in careers in cosmetology, emergency medical services or medical assisting, this is the time to register for 2013 spring semester classes at Southwest Colorado Community College. Classes will begin Jan. 13.

The cosmetology program offers both an associate’s degree as well as a number of certificates. Brenda Maez is the program coordinator. She can be reached at 564-6273 or by email at brenda.maez@pueblocc.edu.

Durango school board will hold meeting Jan. 7

The Durango School District 9-R School Board will meet at 5:30 p.m. Jan. 7 in the board room at the administration building, 201 E. 12th St.
