Student exchange program seeks host families

World Heritage Student Exchange Program, a public benefit organization, is seeking host families for high school students from more than 30 countries.

Couples, single parents and families with and without children in the home are encouraged to host.

People can choose to host a student for a semester or for the school year.

Each student is fully insured, brings his/her personal spending money and expects to contribute to his/her share of household responsibilities, as well as being included in normal family activities and lifestyles.

High school diploma program available

Students who have dropped out of school or are behind for their age and grade and will not graduate on time and are between the ages of 17 and 20 have a second chance to earn a high school diploma.

The Gateway to College program based at Southwest Colorado Community College gives students the chance to get back on track toward earning a diploma and college credits simultaneously.

The final information session for the January 2015 semester will be at 6 p.m. Dec. 10 in room 105 of the Commons Building, 701 Camino del Rio.

Volunteers needed for boys conference

Durango School District 9-R needs 30 to 40 volunteers for its second annual “Keys to High School Success ... and Beyond!” conference for eighth-grade boys who are about to transition to high school. The conference will be held from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. May 7.

Boys will explore topics around healthy relationships, positive self-image and advocacy. Through interactive workshops, the students will gain skills in these areas.

Volunteers are needed to help with the conference. People interested in volunteering should email info@durango.k12.co.us before Jan. 30.

9-R school board to meet Dec. 16

The Durango School District 9-R School Board will meet at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 16 in the board room of the Administration Building, 201 E. 12th St.

Sunnyside and Florida Mesa elementary schools will be highlighted.

Photography students participate in fundraiser

Students in digital photography classes at Durango High School will participate in this year’s Festival of Trees, which is held at the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Train Depot Museum.

The theme of the tree is “100 Photographs.” It is decorated in 100 fine art photos created by students this semester.

The tree will be raffled to raise money for Community Connections in Durango.

Winter Arts Market to be held Saturday

The Durango School District 9-R Title VII Native American Education Program will host its Winter Arts Market from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday at Durango High School.

9-R schools to close for winter break

All Durango School District 9-R schools will be closed for winter break from Dec. 22 to Jan. 2. Schools will be back in session Jan. 5.

Animas High School announces events

Animas High School announces these events:

Janae Hunderman’s Spanish 2 students will perform travel skits focusing on key Spanish vocabulary at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 10 in the AHS Commons. All are welcome.

The AHS Board of Directors will meet from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Dec. 16 on campus. All are welcome.

Students will complete their end-of-semester Presentations of Learning from Dec. 17 to Dec. 19. Students will prepare for Presentations of Learning on Dec. 15 and Dec. 16 during regular school hours. Individual student schedules for Presentations of Learning days will vary.

Career fair to be held at Fort Lewis College

San Juan Board of Cooperative Educational Services will present “Power Expo: Strengthening Today’s Youth for Tomorrow’s Future” on Jan. 8 at Fort Lewis College.

This will be a career fair for area high school students. The fair is seeking volunteers.
