Earn a diploma through Gateway to College

Students, ages 17-20, who have dropped out of school or are behind for their age and grade and will not graduate on time have a second chance to earn a high school diploma.

The Gateway to College program based at Southwest Colorado Community College gives students the chance to earn a diploma and college credits simultaneously. The next information sessions for the fall semester will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday and 10 a.m. Aug. 28 in Room 105 in the Commons Building, 701 Camino del Rio.

Student exchange program seeks hosts

World Heritage Student Exchange Programs is looking for families to host high school students from European, Asian, former Soviet, Middle Eastern and African countries.

The exchange students arrive from their home country shortly before school begins and return at the end of the school year. Each student is fully insured, brings his or her own personal spending money and expects to bear his or her share of household responsibilities.

New Durango youth chorus to be formed

Conductor Amy Barrett announces the formation of the Durango Youth Chorus, a community choir for 12- to 16-year-olds.

The choir will start regular weekly rehearsals from 4:45 to 6 p.m. Mondays beginning Sept. 8 at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 910 East Third Ave.

Barrett will offer children and teenagers who might be interested in the established Durango Children’s Chorale (ages 7 to 11) and the new Durango Youth Chorus (ages 12 to 16) the opportunity to try the choirs Aug. 11 to 14. For this week, the younger group will meet from 3:15 to 4:15 p.m. and the older from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. During the week, students will be able to participate in rehearsals, voice lessons, music-reading activities and a concert. Tuition is $30 for the week.

Miller to begin football practices

Miller Middle School will begin practice for the 2014 season at 3:45 p.m. Monday.

Players should meet in the football field bleachers. Players should have T-shirts, shorts and cleats. All other equipment will be provided by the school. All players also are required to have a Miller “Blue” card before they are allowed to participate. Blue cards can be issued from only the Miller front office after parent/guardian permission, physical form, insurance and athletic code are filled out by the parent/guardian and doctor. Ignacio school district to host dedication

A dedication for “Cafe Lupe,” to honor and remember Lupe Alexander’s 40 years of service to the school district, will take place at the Ignacio School District’s all-staff breakfast at 8 a.m. Aug. 19 at Ignacio Elementary School.

Breakfast will be served from 7:15 to 8 a.m. followed by Alexander’s dedication and then school staff will remain for their events of the day.

9-R School District to host registration

Durango School District 9-R district-wide registration for the 2014-15 school year will be held from noon to 8 p.m. Aug. 14 at all schools.

When people arrive at the school to register, they will be asked for their child’s birth certificate, immunization information and a utility bill that shows proof of residency.

Park Elementary to host open house

Park Elementary School will offer two different times before school starts to meet teachers, tour the building and bring in school supplies.

People can visit the school from 8 to 9 a.m. or 4 to 5:30 p.m. Aug. 22.

DHS collecting participation fees

Durango High School is collecting participation fees and issuing red/white cards for fall 2014 athletic/activity participants from today to Friday.

Requirements to receive a card include: A completed physical/conduct form, completed medical consent form and participation fee. Bring these items to the Activities Office in order to receive a card, which allows athletes to try out and participate in DHS athletics. The Activities Office will accept paperwork and participation fees to issue cards from today to Friday.

9-R student fees:

$75 for individuals.

$150 individual cap.

$200 family cap.

Non-9-R student fees:

$112.50 for individuals.

$225 individual cap.

$300 family cap.

Athletes/participants should be prepared to pay the fee when they pick up their red/white card; students will not be eligible for participation until fees have been paid. However, family financial hardship should not be a barrier to participation. If assistance is needed, call Dave Preszler at 259-1630, ext. 2304.

Fall sports, band to begin practices

Fall sports/band will begin on these dates:

Band Camp will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday to Aug. 15 in the band room and on the practice field. For more information, email Reed. All five days are required.
