Durango Discovery Museum announces summer camp
Camp Discovery, Durango Discovery Museum’s summer camp program, will run from June to August.
Camps will include NASA Space Camp, Cyclin’ Science, Kitchen Laboratory, Lego League Boot Camp and others. The weeklong camps will provide participants with hands-on experience as they collaborate with other campers using authentic scientific materials and tools.

Also the museum’s newest program, Grand Discovery, will teach science through the ages from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. every Monday in March. The program will provide activities for grandparents and their grandchildren, encouraging cross-generational exploration and fun, side-by-side discovery.

Fort Lewis College offers continuing-education classes
Fort Lewis College Continuing Education Program will offer these classes:
“A Hand is Not a Turkey: A Drawing Class for the Artistically Wounded (or Broken-’art’ed) Part 1” will be offered by Brenda Macon on Tuesday and Thursday evenings March 4-13. Macon will help students break down drawing and “seeing” skills into manageable parts. By the end, participants will be drawing multi-dimensional renderings of many objects. The cost is $99 for four classes.
“Wine Tasting: Oak” with Alan Cuenca will be offered March 5. Ever wonder how oak aging or barrel fermentation affects wine? What are the differences between American, French or Slovenian oak? Participants will taste six wines in this class. The cost is $39 per person and includes wines and light snacks.

Medicine Horse Center opens registration for spring camp
Registration is now open for Medicine Horse Center’s Early Release Mondays Spring Horse Camp.
Participants will develop relationships with horses and learn about handling horses, behavior and beginning riding. A more advanced camp will be offered in the summer for people who have participated in the basic horse camps.

The school will host information nights at 5:30 p.m. March 5 and 12. There will not be an information night today.
An AHS School Community meeting will be held at 6 p.m. March 6 at the Durango Community Recreation Center, 2700 Main Ave. This year has brought some changes to AHS, and the board of directors will present an accurate and up-to-date information to all school community members.
Grace academy to host fundraiser March 8
Grace Preparatory Academy will present “WinterPalooza: Swingin’ at the Smiley” from 4 to 7 p.m. March 8 at the Smiley Building, 1309 East Third Ave.
The night will feature live jazz and swing music from “Durango Jazz” and “7 Sharp 11,” dance lessons, a silent auction, dinner and desserts.
Money raised will support Durango’s only university model high school.
Science fair to be held March 6 at fairgrounds
The 56th annual San Juan Basin Regional Science Fair will be held March 6 at the La Plata County Fairgrounds, 2500 Main Ave.
The public is invited to see the work of Southwest Colorado’s young scientists from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. during public viewing. The fair is open to sixth-grade through 12th-grade students from La Plata, Archuleta, Montezuma, San Juan and Dolores counties.
Twenty projects will be nominated to attend the Colorado State Science and Engineering Fair in April, and one high school division project will be nominated to attend the international science fair in May.
Durango school board to meet March 18
The Durango School District 9-R Board of Education will meet at 5:30 p.m. March 18 in the board room at the administration building, 201 E. 12th St.
Park Elementary School will be the school highlight.
Sunnyside Elementary to hold St. Patrick’s event
Sunnyside Elementary School will host its annual St. Patrick’s Day Extravaganza from 5 to 8 p.m. March 15.
The event will be sponsored by the Sunnyside Independent Parent/Teacher Association to raise money to help pay for tablets for Sunnyside students.
The event will feature home-cooked corned beef or smoked brisket, dance music, “green games” for kids and the Sunnyside Cake and Pie Auction.
Tickets are available at the door of the school, 75 County Road 218. Dinner tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for kids 6-12 and free to kids 5 and younger.
Dinner will be served from 5 to 6:30 p.m. One $5 stamp will give kids a chance to play green games from 6:15 to 8 p.m.

DHS to feature skilled-trade championships Friday
Durango High School will host the 2014 SkillsUSA Region 8 Championships at 4 p.m. Friday.
Students will compete in contests involving skilled trades that are taught at the high schools. Local community professional industry personnel will organize, conduct and judge each of these contests.
The local fire and police departments also will be involved. If students place in the top two or three, they qualify to continue to The Colorado State SkillsUSA Conference Championships in Colorado Springs in April.
Champions from there go onto the nationals in Kansas City, Mo., in June.
Miller to host all-school fundraising Friday
On Friday the Miller Angels will be “Trekking for Technology” as they snowshoe for their school.
Students will represent different countries in Olympic style. The Miller Snow Angel Snowshoe Relay is a whole-school field day event that rewards and celebrates students’ efforts to raise money for the school.
The event will be held at the Miller football field at these times: eighth grade from 8:15 to 9:55 a.m.; seventh grade from 10 to 11:45 a.m.; and sixth grade from 2 to 3:45 p.m.
Miller will get 100 percent of the donations. The money raised will provide funding for innovative enrichments to curriculum and instruction, including new programs, trips and speakers.
Donations also will allow for the purchase of iPads and educational applications for students’ use in the classroom. Community members and businesses can support Miller by becoming a corporate sponsor.
