Mountain Middle names head of school
Mountain Middle School – Durango’s free, public, state-chartered middle school for grades six to eight – has hired Durangoan Shane Voss as its new head of school, effective July 1.
An educator for the last 15 years, Voss most recently was a teacher leader and instructor with Durango School District 9-R, where he designed and led the creation of the Basecamp School of Expeditionary Learning at Durango High School.
Selected as a candidate for the Sallie Mae First Class National Teacher of the Year award and a nominee for the Durango Foundation for Educational Excellence Teacher of the Year, Voss is a graduate of Fort Lewis College and holds a master’s degree in humanities from Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill.

Driver’s education classes available
Four Corners Safety Association will offer the next 30-hour driver’s education classes from June 24 to 27 and from Aug. 13 to 16.
A class also will be held from July 15 to 18 in Ignacio. The cost for the class plus the six hours of driving required by the state is $385. Classes are limited to 25 students.

Animas High School announces events

The main office is closed for the summer. The school’s summer switchboard will handle all inquires and messages at 247-2474.
The AHS administration and executive team will serve year-round. Head of School Jake Lauer is available for meetings through Friday. The school is working to establish executive office space for the summer while it moves to its new location at Twin Buttes. The location at 3206 Main Ave. will officially close June 28.
These mandatory parent-orientation nights will be held: Ninth-grade meeting will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Aug. 6; 10th-grade meeting will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Aug. 8; 11th-grade meeting will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Aug. 13; and 12th-grade meeting will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Aug. 15. Parents should bring their son or daughter with them. Participants will have an opportunity to meet AHS faculty and staff members; learn about the college-counseling department and curriculum; review the school’s policies and procedures; and more. Parents who have more than one student at AHS, should try to attend each appropriate event as some information will be grade-specific.
Licensing for home child care available
The Early Childhood Council of La Plata County, in collaboration with the Southwest Office of Child Care Resource & Referral, will offer classes for people interested in becoming licensed home child care providers in Colorado.
Pre-licensing will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 13 and 29 at The Early Childhood Training Center in Durango. The cost is $50.

Katelyn Hillmeyer graduates from Cornell
Katelyn Hillmeyer of Durango was one of more than 250 students to graduate from Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa, on May 12.
Hillmeyer graduated with a bachelor’s degree in special studies in art history with an additional major in individualized studies.
Ace Else graduates from Johnson and Wales
Ace Else, son of Jay and Patti Else of Durango, graduated cum laude from Johnson and Wales University, Denver, on May 18.
He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in culinary arts and food-service management.
Else is currently living and working in Denver.
Benjamin Harclerode named to dean’s list
Benjamin Harclerode of Cortez was recognized for outstanding academic accomplishments by being named to LeTourneau University’s dean’s list for the Spring 2013 semester.
Harclerode achieved a grade-point average between 3.50 and 3.99 for the semester.
LeTourneau University is in Longview, Texas.
