Fort Lewis College schedules job fair Sept. 18
The Fort Lewis College Fall Job Fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 18 in the Student Union Ballroom.
The fair is free and open to the public.
Riverview Elementary School receives innovation award
At the Durango School District 9-R convocation Aug. 14, Greg Behn, bank president, presented the inaugural Bank of Colorado Award for Innovation to Riverview Elementary School, in honor of the school’s new dedicated science lab.
Doug Geygan, principal, and Andy Martinez, assistant principal, accepted the award for Riverview. Every student at Riverview will use the lab for a variety of hands-on explorations, from energy-transfer experiments to solving weather mysteries.
Included in the bank’s award is a $2,500 grant for lab materials and books relating to the science curriculum. The Durango Foundation for Educational Excellence is serving as fiscal agent for the grant.
Fort Lewis College to host Fall Convocation on Friday
Fort Lewis College Fall Convocation will be held at 4 p.m. Friday in Whalen Gym.
FLC President Dene Thomas will give the convocation address. Fall Convocation is a tradition that brings the incoming freshman class and transfer students, along with their families for a special welcome to campus.
Along with Thomas, the new students get to hear from their student body president, faculty senate president as well as Board of Trustees Chairman John Wells.
After convocation, a picnic will be held near the FLC Amphitheatre. All new freshmen, transfer students and their families are welcome to attend and meet their new professors and classmates.
Durango school board is seeking candidates
The Durango School District is seeking candidates to run for six of seven board seats, set to open at the end of the current term.
To be qualified for this election, a candidate must have been a registered elector and a resident of the school district for at least 12 consecutive months before the election and a current resident of the director district that he or she may represent.
No one can serve on the school board who has been convicted of an offense against a child. Elected members must have a broad view of the district, be nonpartisan and possess immediate skills and knowledge on kindergarten to 12th-grade education.
Candidates are sought who can dedicate the required time to attend events, work sessions and board meetings.
Applications, petitions and more information are available at the Administration Building, 201 E. 12th St. All applications and petitions must be turned in by Friday.

Durango School District schools to close for Labor Day
All Durango School District 9-R schools will be closed Monday for Labor Day.
Families in School program to be offered
Staff members of the Pine River Community Learning Center will offer the 2013-14 Families in School program for kindergarten to third-grade students at Ignacio Elementary School.
The program encourages parents, siblings and other relatives of young students to get involved in their education through hands-on participation.
The program features events such as Reading Wednesdays, where families are invited to have lunch together and to read books provided by program staff members to their children, and the monthly Family Night, when families are treated to dinner while playing educational games, doing puzzles and other activities.
The program is free to families of Ignacio Elementary School students in kindergarten to third grade.

Ignacio schools to host ribbon-cutting ceremony
Ignacio School District will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new middle school at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at 222 County Road 320.
Students, parents and community members are encouraged to attend and tour the school that will house sixth through eighth grade students.

AHS will host open houses at its new campus from 9 a.m. to noon Sept. 7, 14, 21 and 28. The campus is 1.7 miles west of DoubleTree Hotel on U.S. Highway 160 in Twin Buttes. No reservations are needed.
The Back to School Picnic will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Sept. 5 in the gazebo at Rotary Park. Ninth-grade parents are asked to bring appetizers or salads; 10th- and 11th-grade parents a main dish; and 12th-grade parents a dessert. Participants will meet advisers and teachers and hear from Head of School Jake Lauer.
FLC Continuing Education to offer writer’s workshop
Fort Lewis College Continuing Education will offer a writer’s workshop called “Make Good Writing Great!” from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays from Sept. 24 to Oct. 29.
Students will learn to analyze effective writing, to recognize the qualities that separate great writing from adequate writing and to develop the skills to take their own writing to a higher level. Specific strategies will be introduced, discussed and applied to assignments in each class.
Instructor Lynn Kuntz’s credits include five books for children, a feature family film and magazine and newspaper articles for a variety of publications.
