Animas High School announces these events:
Enrollment for the 2014-15 school year is open. Spots are available for ninth, 10th and 11th grade. Students interested in enrolling at AHS can find an enrollment form at www.animashighschool.com.

Information nights will be held at 5:30 p.m. today and March 12.
The AHS Board of Directors will meet at 6 p.m. Thursday at Durango Community Recreation Center, 2700 Main Ave. This year has brought some changes to AHS, and the board will give accurate and up-to-date information to all school community members.
From March 3 to March 21, the juniors will have their LINK Internships. They’ll be pursuing passions, testing out careers, honing valuable skills and making contributions to a host of businesses and organizations in the Durango and beyond. The LINK Exhibition will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. March 21 at AHS.
Driver-education course available
Four Corners Safety Association will offer the next 30-hour driver-education class during spring break, March 24-27.
The cost for the class plus the six hours of driving required by the state is $385. Classes are limited to 20 students.

Continuing-education classes available at FLC
Fort Lewis College Continuing Education Program will offer these classes:
“Local Medicinal Plants” taught by Anna-Marija Helt will be held Friday evenings from Friday to March 21. Students will learn a dozen native and “weedy” local medicinal plants in detail: their indications and contraindications, how and when to harvest them, how to prepare them and some folklore. The cost is $59 for three classes.
“Retirement Planning 101: How to Develop Your Retirement Plan Properly” with Roger O’Keefe will take place on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from March 11 to March 20. Students will learn how to properly grow and protect a nest egg and how to effectively manage caregiving, long-term care and life-resource planning. Where to live during retirement, traveling and the importance of a “bucket list” also will be discussed. Upon completion, students will receive unlimited access to coaching, tools and retirement-planning resources through the Internet. The cost is $69 for four classes, including materials.
“Fiction Writing” with Will Gray will be held Tuesday evenings from March 11 to May 6. Students will learn to expand creativity using key elements of successful fiction: plot, characterization, tone, setting, dramatic detail, action and dialogue. This course will include in-class exercises, weekly writing assignments and study of notable fiction writers. The cost is $199 for eight classes. The deadline to register is 4 p.m. today.

Community Challenge to take place March 14
The fourth annual Community Challenge: Meeting the Needs of Seniors, Providers and Caregivers will take place from 8:15 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 14 at the La Plata County Fairgrounds, 2500 Main Ave.
Registration will begin at 7:30 a.m. The keynote speaker will be Viki Kind, clinical bioethicist, author of The Caregiver’s Path to Compassionate Decision Making: Making Choices for Those Who Can’t. Topics will include: building positive outcomes for seniors and their families, a decision tree for when capacity changes, advance directives planning and updates, dementia and Alzheimer’s, palliative care and prescription management, compassion fatigue, continuous care/resources for local family members and community resource fair.

9-R school board to meet March 18
The Durango School District 9-R School Board will meet at 5:30 p.m. March 18 in the board room at the administration building, 201 E. 12th St.
Park Elementary School will be the school highlight.
Sunnyside to host St. Patrick’s event
Sunnyside Elementary School will host the annual St. Patrick’s Day Extravaganza from 5 to 8 p.m. March 15 at the school, 75 County Road 218.
The event is sponsored by the Sunnyside Independent Parent/Teacher Association to raise money to help pay for tablets.
The event will feature home-cooked corned beef or smoked brisket with all of the sides, dance music, “Green Games” for kids and the Sunnyside Cake and Pie Auction.
Tickets will be available at the door at the school. Dinner tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for kids 6 to 12 and free to kids 5 and younger. Dinner will be served from 5 to 6:30 p.m. One $5 stamp gives kids a chance to play Green Games from 6:15 to 8 p.m.

Special education to be discussed
Durango School District 9-R and San Juan BOCES will cosponsor a discussion with Lewis Jackson called “Full Inclusion in the Classroom for All Students” from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Saturday at the Miller Middle School auditorium.
Jackson, professor of special education at the University of Northern Colorado, will facilitate a dialogue to discuss how inclusion in the general education classroom is evolving, the roles and responsibilities in the inclusive classroom and how parents can effectively advocate for their child and work to build a constructive relationship with the general education teachers to support the needs of their child.

DHS theater to present ‘Sound of Music’
The Durango High School Theater Department will present “The Sound of Music” on Friday, Saturday, March 13, 14, and 15.
All performances are at 7 p.m., and doors will open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $10. The box office will open daily from 4:30 to 6 p.m. in The Commons at DHS and open at 5:30 p.m. on show nights.

Grace academy to host fundraiser
Grace Preparatory Academy will present “WinterPalooza: Swingin’ at the Smiley” from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday at the Smiley Building, 1309 East Third Ave.
The event will feature live jazz and swing music from the “Durango Jazz” and “7 Sharp 11,” dance lessons, a silent auction, dinner and desserts.
Money raised will support Durango’s only university-model high school.
