Learn to support seniors, caregivers

The fifth annual “Community Challenge: Meeting the Needs of Seniors, Providers and Caregivers” will take place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 4 at the La Plata County Fairgrounds Extension Building, 2500 Main Ave.

Topics and activities will include: When to step in and help a loved one; fall prevention and safety; positive aging; understanding palliative care; caregiver wellness; planning for the unexpected financially; and advance medical directives.

Credit union provides $5,000 scholarship

Credit Union of Colorado Foundation is seeking applicants for its college scholarship program.

The foundation will provide a $5,000 annual scholarship to eight students. Eligibility for a scholarship is extended to students who are Colorado residents enrolled in or scheduled to enter an accredited college or university as an undergraduate taking at least 12 credit hours. Scholarship award criteria include maintaining a minimum 3.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale in high school or during the previous 12 months as a college undergraduate.

Applicants should be active in providing community service at school or in the community. Scholarship renewals are not automatic; the student must reapply each year.

Summer school offers chance to catch up

Durango High School will offer summer school from June 8 to July 3.

Students may take summer school courses only if they have previously failed a course and need to recover credit.

All courses will be computer-based using an online educational system called APEX. English, math, science and social studies core academic classes will be available.

Fees must be paid before a student can enroll in a course, and all courses taken during summer school must be completed by July 3. If courses are not completed, course fees will not be refunded, and students will need to retake the failed course during the next school year.

The last day of school for all Durango School District 9-R schools will be June 3.

District office to move to summer hours

Beginning June 8 the Durango School District 9-R District Office will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Thursday. The office will be closed on Fridays.

Florida fifth-graders to present exhibitions

The fifth-grade students at Florida Mesa Elementary School will present their end-of-year exhibitions from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday.

Mountain Middle announces events

Mountain Middle School announces these events:

Todd Macon’s sixth-grade humanities students will host “Poetry Cafe: Voice and Power,” a night of serving poetry and performances from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Henry Strater Theatre, 699 Main Ave. Using decorated “poetry delivery tubes,” students will act as hosts, waiters, bussers and cooks to serve poetry to their guests from a menu of their own creation. Sixth-graders will then perform original and popular poetry.

Seventh-grade students will host a “Human Body Exhibition” from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Mountain Middle School. Students have each prepared two different projects to showcase their knowledge of human anatomy and physiology. The first of these projects is a 3-D display of a chosen body system that focuses on the major organs, tissues and specialized cells that allow the system to complete its major function(s). The second project exhibited will be photo and/or video tutorials that take viewers through the fetal pig dissections students have just completed.

Eighth-graders will hold an exhibition from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Fort Lewis College Ballroom. Their projects will exemplify their knowledge of space and astronomy. Students also will share their knowledge gained during a one-week internship within the community.

All students will be conducting their Transitional Presentations of Learning on June 3.

The Eighth-Grade Graduation Ceremony will be held at 5 p.m. June 4 at the Fort Lewis College Ballroom.

Home-school program accepting applications

Durango School District 9-R’s Shared School Program is taking applications for the 2015-16 school year.

The shared school program is designed for home-school families and offers classes such as art, music, drama computer, physical education and Spanish.

Elementary classes will meet from 8:45 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Middle school classes will meet from 8:15 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesdays. The district is considering expanding the middle school program to two days a week for the upcoming school year. All classes meet at Miller Middle School.
