Creative writing class for middle schoolers
“Creative Writing for Middle Schoolers,” a class by Rachel Turiel, will be held from 3 to 4:15 p.m. Mondays from Nov. 3 to Dec. 8.
There will be no class Nov. 24. Through writing exercises and assignments, participants will explore the magic of language and storytelling.
Turiel is managing editor of Edible Southwest Colorado Magazine, frequent contributor to NPR’s “Earth Notes” and a columnist for The Durango Herald.

Mountain Middle to present exhibit
The Mountain Middle School seventh-grade math/science class will exhibit its “Animas River Project” from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. today at Powerhouse Science Center, 1333 Camino Del Rio.
Students conducted nine scientific studies aimed at measuring the quality of the Animas River water.
Continuing education available at FLC
Fort Lewis College Continuing Education Program will offer these classes:
“Nonprofit Management: Capturing Their Hearts Through Your Stories” will be taught by Daniel P. Harris from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Oct. 29. This class will help nonprofits use their oral and written stories for grant applications, websites, newsletters, Facebook and more. The class will help participants prepare at least one story that reflects their passion and communicates why their cause is important. The cost is $59.
“Italian Translation Workshop” will be taught by Paul Boyer from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays from Nov. 5 to Dec. 3. The class is intended for students who have a basic knowledge of the Italian language – its pronunciation, grammar and basic vocabulary. It is a continuation, or a second level class, for students who want to develop language skills beyond the entry level. The cost is $129 for four classes.

‘Dead Man Walking’ reading scheduled
The Life-Long Learning Lecture Series and Common Reading Experience at Fort Lewis College will present a dramatic reading of the play “Dead Man Walking” today in Roshong Recital Hall in Jones Hall.
There will be two presentations, one at 4 p.m. and one at 7 p.m. FLC theater students and members of the Durango community will present a reading of Tim Robbins’ play “Dead Man Walking.” There will be a talk-back with cast and audience after the reading.

Animas High School announces events
Animas High School announces these events:
Sister Helen Prejean, author of Dead Man Walking, will speak with students about her work as an activist from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. today in conjunction with her visit to Fort Lewis College for the Common Reading Experience.
LINK Program Coordinator Zoe Nelsen will host a parent information session from 5 to 6 p.m. today about the internship program (Leading Internships for New Knowledge) required of all AHS juniors.
The AHS Board of Directors will meet from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. All are welcome.
Ashley Carruth’s 11th-grade humanities classes will present the “Morality and Politics of Justice: Coffee House Community Dialogues” from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Oct. 30 at Durango Joe’s, 732 E. College Drive, and from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Durango Joe’s at 40 Town Plaza. The public is invited to discuss students’ proposals for how the government should resolve various political issues, not based on what Democrats or Republicans espouse, but based on what is morally and politically just.
Accountability group to meet at DHS
The Durango High School Accountability Committee meets from 4:15 to 5:15 p.m. the first Thursday of the month in the DHS library.
The committee is responsible for ensuring the integrity of school budgets, spending, safety and academic performance. The committee reviews budgets and student data and provides input to ensure procedures benefit all students.
Interested parties are invited to attend. Upcoming dates include: Nov. 6, Dec. 4, Jan. 8, Feb. 5, March 5, April 2, and May 7.
Sunnyside to host Halloween carnival
The 31st annual Sunnyside Elementary Halloween Carnival and Silent Auction will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday.
Admission is a book or baked good per family. Game tickets will be sold at the door for 25 cents each. Activities will include a haunted house, book walk, plinko, bingo, bouncy house and more. Foods and desserts will be on sale, and a silent auction will be held. All proceeds will benefit Sunnyside’s reading and computing programs.

Fort Lewis Mesa to host carnival
Fort Lewis Mesa will hold its Halloween Carnival on Nov. 1.
Dinner will start at 5:30 p.m. with a costume contest at 5:40 p.m. The event will feature games and the “Little Red Riding Hood Haunted House” from 6 to 8:30 p.m.

Florida Mesa to host Harvest Carnival
The 42nd annual Harvest Carnival will be held at Florida Mesa Elementary School from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday.
There will be a wheel of fortune, cake walk, fishing pond, ring toss, pumpkin bowling, fortune telling and more.
Park to host pumpkin festival
Park Elementary School will host its annual Pumpkin Patch Festival from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday.
There will be games, face painting, pumpkins, prizes, and food.
District 9-R schools to be closed Oct. 31
All schools in Durango School District 9-R will be closed Oct. 31 for a professional development day.
Animas Valley to offer parenting class
Animas Valley Elementary School will offer a “Love and Logic” parenting class from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays from Nov. 5 to Dec. 19 in the counselor’s room.
The class costs $35 for single parents or $40 per couple, which includes a parent handbook, child care and snacks. Scholarships are available on an as needed basis. Registration is necessary by Oct. 31.

DHS winter athletes need red cards
Durango High School is collecting participation fees and issuing red cards for winter sports participants.
Winter sports will begin Nov. 12 and include boys basketball, girls basketball, girls swimming and wrestling.
Requirements and information needed to receive a card include: a completed physical/conduct form, completed medical consent form and participation fee.
The Activities Office will accept paperwork and participation fees to issue red cards through Nov. 11. The fees for 9-R students are $75 for individuals; $150 is the individual cap; and $200 is the family cap. The fees for non 9-R students are $112.50 for an individual; $225 is the individual cap; and $300 is the family cap.
Athletes should be prepared to pay the fee when they pick up their red cards. Students will not be eligible for participation until fees have been paid. Family financial hardship should not be a barrier to participation. If assistance is needed, call Dave Preszler at 259-1630, ext. 2302.
