Childhood council celebrates Teacher Appreciation Week

Durango district to host public budget meeting today

Durango School District 9-R Superintendent Dan Snowberger will lead a public budget meeting at 6 p.m. today in the Needham Elementary School library.

Snowberger will share the proposed 2013-14 school budget and explain large expenditure items and budget plans for the new school year.

Feedback requested from parents of minorities

The Minority Student Achievement Task Force is looking for parents to provide feedback to identify measures that are either helping or hindering minority students’ academic success.

Durango middle, high schools seeking committee volunteers

The International Baccalaureate Middle Year Programme at Miller Middle School and Atlas at Durango High School are looking for parents and community members who are interested in participating on their Steering Committee and their Educational Team.

These teams will work with the International Baccalaureate coordinator to help develop clear, written plans that provide the program’s or school’s goals, strategies, accountability and timelines.

Adolescent relationships to be discussed Thursday

“Parents Are the Educators: A Workshop on Health, Sexuality and Relationships and How to be Your Child’s Most Important Educator” will be held from noon to 1:30 p.m. Thursday in the Twilight Room of Durango Community Recreation Center, 2700 Main Ave.

This workshop is geared toward parents of adolescents and is sponsored by Durango School District 9-R. Light refreshments will be served.

Early education applications available for Bayfield program

Bayfield Early Education Programs is accepting applications for the 2013-14 preschool year.

Children must be at least 3 years old and potty trained to attend. Families may choose full- or half-day classroom attendance, an after-school program and a Friday enrichment class.

The school is in session for nine months and follows the Bayfield School District calendar.

The program offers 20 Colorado Preschool Program slots for children who are educationally at risk. Fifteen factors are considered such as prematurity, abuse in the family, learning disabilities in the family and qualifying for low or reduced lunch.

This program is available to 4-year-olds who are going to kindergarten the next year. Parents with moderate or low incomes may qualify for a sliding scale. They can apply for scholarships, barter or use social services to help pay tuition.

School Based Health Centers running brick campaign

The School Based Health Centers have launched a brick campaign, which will run until May 31.

Community members can purchase bricks priced at $50 and $100. Profits will cover operation costs, such as salaries for health-care providers and supplies.

Bricks will be engraved with a message of the patron’s choice, and permanently displayed in the front entry of the health center at Durango High School.

Fort Lewis College offers courses for educators

Fort Lewis College Continuing Education program offers continuing education for kindergarten to 12th-grade educators online or by CD-ROM.

These courses provide expert instruction at a pace that fits the participants’ schedules. Three continuing education units will cost $225, and 4.5 continuing education units will cost $250.

St. Columba School to host plant sale Thursday

St. Columba School will host a plant sale from 2 to 4 p.m. Thursday and Friday in the middle school garden, 1840 East Second Ave.

The sale will feature herbs, flowers and vegetables. Small plants will be $2 and large plants will be $3. Proceeds will benefit the 2013-14 Gardening in the Classroom Program. Also, registration is open for 2013-14 school year.

Pine River learning center offers three classes

Pine River Community Learning Center will offer these classes:

“Introduction to Basic Internet Safety” will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. May 15 at the Bayfield Center. The cost will be $25.

“Introduction to Crochet” will be held from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Thursdays through May 23 at the Bayfield Center. The cost will be $40.

“Introduction to Excel” will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesdays through June 4 in the computer lab in the Bayfield Center. The cost will be $75.

Special-education committee to meet today in Durango

The Special Education Advisory Committee will meet at 5:15 p.m. today at San Juan BOCES, on the third floor of the Durango School District 9-R Administration Building.

Bayfield kindergarten to host orientation

Bayfield Elementary Primary School will host kindergarten orientation and registration for the 2013-14 school year May 13 and 14 at the school, 658 S. East St.

Children need to be 5 on, or before, Sept. 15. The school does not have open enrollment, applicants must be residents of Bayfield.

The Native American Program will host a public hearing for a grant application and the Title VII Parent Advisory Committee from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. today in room No. 2074 of Durango High School.

Animas High School will host these events:

The humanities and Spanish classes will host an End of Year Exhibition from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the school.

The Parent Advisory Committee will meet at noon Monday at Doughworks, 2653 Main Ave.
