Fort Lewis College to host job fair
The Fort Lewis College Job Fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday in the ballroom at the Student Union.
More than 30 local and national employers will be present from a wide range of industries. These organizations are looking to hire. Participants should bring a résumé and be prepared to interview.

Public is invited to immigration talk
The Life-Long Learning Lecture Series at Fort Lewis College will present “Economic and Environmental Arguments for Reducing Immigration into the United States” at 7 p.m., Thursday in Noble Hall, Room 130.
Philip Cafaro, professor of philosophy at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, will give the lecture, which is free and open to the public.

Latino College Day set for Feb. 12 at FLC
Fort Lewis College’s Latino College Day will be held from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Feb. 12 in El Centro de Muchos Colores in the college’s Student Union.
Prospective students and their families are invited to celebrate their Hispanic heritage.
There will be workshops to help them fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), engage in student panels, take a campus tour and more.
Ballet Folklorico de Durango will give a live performance, and there will be opportunities to connect with current students and FLC alumni who identify as Hispano and/or multicultural.
Lunch and dinner will be provided by FLC and El Centro from 5 to 7 p.m. Dinner requires an RSVP.

All Durango School District 9-R schools will be closed Feb. 15 in observance of Presidents Day.
District 9-R seeking conference volunteers
Durango School District 9-R needs 30 to 40 volunteers for its third annual “Keys to High School Success … and Beyond!” conference for eighth-grade students who are about to transition to high school.
The conference will be held from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. May 5.
The goal is to teach skills to support students in their efforts to build positive self-image, strong relationships with others and a sense of self-advocacy.

Eighth-graders invited to learn about DHS
All eighth-grade students and their families are invited to the Durango High School Expo for Incoming Freshman to learn about the programs at the school from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday.
Breakout sessions will cover the eighth-to-ninth-grade transition, grade-level counseling, concurrent enrollment opportunities, AP courses, work experience, internships, clubs, activities, athletics, student support programs and special education.
Title VII program to hold potluck

Miller Middle School sponsors fundraiser
Miller Middle School is conducting a penny drive to benefit Pennies for Patients, a society that helps children with leukemia and lymphoma.
The drive has begun and will continue through Feb. 19.
Miller students can bring in pennies to benefit their grade level. Other coins or bills can be put into other grade levels’ jars, taking away from their total.
Durango High School to host internship fair
Durango High School will hold its first Internship/Apprenticeship Fair from 1 to 3 p.m. Monday.
The fair is for any organization interested in having a DHS student as an intern this spring or summer.
Companies with apprenticeships are also encouraged to attend. The fair is for juniors and seniors.

Durango High School to offer health fair
Durango High School will host its Heath Fair from 8:15 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Feb. 11 in the Commons area.
Representatives from local health and wellness groups will provide information about their services.
Attendees will include San Juan Basin Health Department, Gray Matters, Axis Health System, Turtle Lake Refuge, Southwest Regional Emergency and Trauma Advisory Council, Planned Parenthood and the Colorado State Patrol.

Sophomores in Stephen Sellers’ humanities classes will host a book launch party for their Poet Laureate Project from 5 to 7 p.m. Feb. 11 at The Open Shutter Gallery, 735 Main Ave. The students have researched World War I from different countries’ perspectives and have created poems and essays that are compiled into a book that is 100 percent student made. Students will showcase and perform their poems as well as share the book with the community. There will be snacks, refreshments and a silent auction. All are welcome to attend.
AHS College Counselor Jess Adams will offer a support session for seniors and their families who would like help completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) from 5 to 8 p.m. Feb. 11 in the AHS Commons.
All students and families interested in learning about AHS and enrolling for the 2016-17 school year are encouraged to attend an AHS information session and to sign up for a shadow day. Mountain Middle enrollment is open
Enrollment at Mountain Middle School for next year’s sixth, seventh and eighth grades is open through Feb. 29. The lottery will take place March 2.
The school is also accepting intent-to-enroll forms for fourth and fifth grades in 2017.

Arts center offers youth performing arts
The Durango Arts Center announces new youth performing arts classes for children ages 4 to 8:
“Wee Glee” for ages 4-6 will be held from 3 to 3:45 p.m. Mondays from Feb. 8 through May 23. Through fun games, dance parties and silly songs students will learn the foundations of music and dance. This session will culminate in a performance near the end of May (no extra classes or rehearsals will be required for this). The class is $140 for DAC members and $160 for non-members.
“Confetti” for ages 6-8 will be held from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Thursdays from Feb. 11 through May 26. At this musical theater class, students will learn the basics of singing and dancing and several songs. This class will culminate in a performance near the end of May (no extra classes or rehearsals will be required for this). The class is $155 for DAC members and $175 for non-members.

New Horizons opens enrollment period
New Horizons Educational Environment, 1131 East Third Ave., is dedicated to preparing children to be successful in school and in life.
The preschool is open to children ages 3 to 5.
It is a small center with a maximum of 15 students with two teachers.
Enrollment for the 2016-17 year is open until March 1.
