Student exchange seeks local representatives
ASSE International Student Exchange Programs is seeking people to serve as representatives of our community.
ASSE provides academic year and semester exchange programs in the U.S. for high school students from around the world.
Students are 15 to 18 years old and have passed a series of academic and character requirements. Local ASSE representatives recruit and screen prospective host families, interview students to study abroad and supervise the exchange students in their community.
Representatives are compensated based on the number of students they are supervising. There also is a bonus opportunity.

The Fort Lewis College Continuing Education Program will offer these classes:
“Nonprofit Management: Practical Program Evaluation – Measuring What You Value” will be taught by Lauren Patterson from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. today. Patterson has been providing practical program planning and evaluation services to Southwest Colorado nonprofits, government agencies, public-health entities and education institutions for 14 years. Students will learn to define elements of program evaluation in practical terms; develop a logic model for programs or initiatives; and list components of a comprehensive evaluation plan. Advance registration is required. The cost is $59.

Animas Valley Elementary offers parenting class
Animas Valley Elementary School will offer a “Love and Logic” parenting class from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays, through Dec. 19 in the counselor’s room.
The class costs $35 for single parents or $40 per couple, which includes a parent handbook, creative-play child care and snacks. Scholarships are available on an as-needed basis.

Park Elementary students selling Desert Sun coffee
Park Elementary School students are raising money for the school by selling Desert Sun coffee through Friday.
Orders will be taken by Park students. The cost is $11 per bag. Options include two regular roasts and one decaf blend.
Park Elementary to host family movie night
Park Elementary School will host its family movie night at 5:30 p.m. Friday in the cafeteria.
The movie will be “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs,” and a spaghetti dinner will be served.
DHS Basecamp to screen film Nov. 19
Durango High School Basecamp will host a screening of the film “Wampler’s Ascent” from 7 to 9 p.m. Nov. 19 at Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave.
The film is about a man with a severe disability climbing El Capitan in Yosemite.
The purpose of the event is to raise awareness about disabilities.
District 9-R now hiring school bus drivers
Durango School District 9-R is looking for responsible candidates to join its transportation team.
The district will provide the training and assessment needed to become a school bus driver. The school district’s benefit package includes health insurance and personal- and sick-leave days.

Fort Lewis Mesa to host Turkey Trot
Fort Lewis Mesa will host its Turkey Trot at 10 a.m. Nov. 21 in the gym.
The Turkey Trot will be held after a student performance. Students and their parents will run around the nature trail a couple of times, then lunch will be served.
Animas Valley Elementary to host Turkey Trot
Animas Valley Elementary School will host its Turkey Trot from 10:20 to 10:45 a.m. Nov. 19.
There also will be a performance of “Fanga Alafia” at 10:10 a.m. by fifth-grade students.
Financial aid to be discussed Monday
A “Financial Aid Overview” will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Durango High School library.
The overview is for juniors, seniors and their families.
The group will discuss how to locate scholarships and review the steps necessary to complete the FAFSA – Free Application for Federal Student Aid, which is required by most college admissions offices.
Riverview Elementary collecting used cellphones
In honor of Veterans Day, Riverview Elementary School, 2900 Mesa Ave., will collect used cellphones.
The collection period is for the month of November. When people donate to the Cell Phones for Soldiers program, they will help provide troops with free calling cards to stay connected with their loved ones.
Concurrent enrollment open at Durango High
Concurrent enrollment for second semester is open.
Concurrent enrollment enables high school seniors and juniors to enroll in college classes and earn credits toward a college degree. Durango School District 9-R will pay tuition while families will pay fees and book costs.

Durango High collecting participation fees
Durango High School is collecting participation fees and issuing red cards for winter 2014-15 athletic participants.
Winter sports will begin today and include boys basketball, girls basketball, girls swimming and wrestling. Requirements and information to receive a red card include a completed physical/conduct form, completed medical consent form and participation fees.
The 9-R student fee schedule is $75 for individuals, $150 is the individual cap and $200 is the family cap. The non-9-R student fee is $112.50 for individuals, $225 is the individual cap and $300 is the family cap.
Athletes should be prepared to pay the fee when they pick up their red card and students will not be eligible for participation until fees have been paid. Family financial hardship should not be a barrier to participation. If assistance is needed, call Dave Preszler at 259-1630, ext. 2302.

The Fall Friendraiser will take place from 5:30 to 8 p.m. today at the Henry Strater Theatre, 699 Main Ave. The goal is to raise $75,000 for the school. There will be hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar.
Caitlyn Kneller’s geometry students’ Math-Art Installation is on exhibit through Saturday at Fort Lewis College in the Education/Business Hall on the second floor. Students took inspiration from M.C. Escher to develop their own tessellation tile that resembled an animal, person or other character and then tessellated an 11-inch by 17-inch page. They explored the question: Are tessellations math or art?
Colleen Dunning’s biology students will exhibit their Crime Scene Investigation Project from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at AHS. Students used a variety of forensic techniques to solve a crime, including DNA processing, blood-typing, fingerprinting, blood-spatter analysis, bullet trajectory analysis, mitochondrial DNA analysis, forensic entomology and skeletal-remains analysis. Through this project, students also examine reasons for wrongful convictions and how scientific advancements have improved the efficacy of the U.S. justice system.
Jessica McCallum’s humanities students will present “Deconstructing our America: An Evening of Rhetorical Discourse” at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday at Animas City Theatre, 128 E. College Drive. Juniors will express their emerging political and ideological perspectives about issues important to them. Students have crafted original rhetorical pieces in various genres such as oratory, debate, music and spoken-word poetry.
Sophomores in Shay Lopez’s humanities class will read their original historical fiction from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Studio &, 1027 Main Ave. The students have crafted short stories written from the perspective of someone living during World War I or World War II.
Sen. Michael Bennet is seeking interns
U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet, D-Colorado, is accepting internship applications from undergraduate students, recent graduates and graduate students for his offices in Washington, Colorado Springs, Denver, Durango, Fort Collins, Grand Junction and Pueblo.
Washington interns attend hearings and briefings, research legislative issues, meet with Congressional officials and staff members, conduct U.S. Capitol tours and draft correspondence.
Colorado interns assist constituent advocates as they meet with and assist Coloradans who need help navigating the federal government, represent Sen. Bennet at local meetings and events, research legislative issues and draft correspondence.
Internships are available on either a full-time or part-time basis. These are unpaid positions. Interested students and recent graduates should apply at www.bennet.senate.gov/services/internships.
The deadline to apply for an internship in Washington for the spring semester is Nov. 15.
For internships in one of Bennet’s Colorado offices, applicants will be considered on a rolling basis and can apply at any time.
