Durango district schools to host ‘Meet Your Teacher’

All elementary schools in Durango School District 9-R will host “Meet Your Teacher” from 8 to 9 a.m. Aug. 22.

Students and their families can drop off their school supplies and get to know their teachers before school starts Aug. 23.

Durango School District announces check-in dates

Each school in Durango School District 9-R will host a check-in to collect registration paperwork from new students, confirm information for returning students and share important school information about the coming year.

This is an opportunity to sign up for transportation services, apply for free and reduced meals and sign up for school news.

Check-in dates remaining are:

Pass-holders can access all DHS sporting events that have a gate fee and skip long entry lines. Half of the profits from the booster passes directly help athletic programs.

Miller Middle School to offer health fair

Miller Middle School will host a mini health fair for all 9-R families in coordination with Mercy Regional Medical Center from noon to 6 p.m. Aug. 17.

The event will include:

Mercy Sports Medicine will be conducting baseline concussion testing.Axis Health Systems’ Student Based Health Center will offer $25 sports physicals, sliding scale immunizations and well-child checks. Gray Matters will offer helmet fittings.Smilemakers of San Juan Basin Health will offer low/no cost dental cleanings.To register and for more information, email mmooney@durango.k12.co.us.

Arts center to provide after-school classes

Durango Arts Center is will provide its “After School Art” workshops at all Durango School District 9-R elementary schools this fall. Registration is now open.

The program, which is in its 24th year, offers a new art medium, artist, culture or concept every month. The classes are non-competitive and allow individual expression and skill development.

Classes are held in the art room of each school once per week, and space is generally limited to 12 students per class.

Alternative academy invites you to open house

Silver Spruce Academy will hold an open house and information session from 3 to 6 p.m. Aug. 18 at the Ignacio ELHI classrooms, 115 Ute St. in Ignacio.

The session will be followed by Silver Spruce offers enrichment programs for curriculum education and home-schooling students. The academy operates as a shared-school program with fee-based options.

Classes are offered in Gem Village, Ignacio and other locations in the Four Corners.

Registration is now open. Registration forms are available at www.silverspruceacademy.org.

Fall classes will be posted online Aug. 17, and returning student enrollment will be available Aug. 23.

Open enrollment for new students will be available Aug. 24-25. Enrollment is limited and will close when the cap of 100 students is reached.

A board meeting will be held at 6 p.m. There will be three open seats on the board in January for anyone interested in serving.

Animas High School to hold information session

Families can learn more about Animas High School’s project-based learning program, which helps prepare students for college and post-secondary academics, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the school, 20091 U.S. Highway 160 west.
