Durango School District announces events

The first day of school for Durango School District 9-R will be Tuesday.The Durango School District 9-R Board will meet at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 31 in the board room at 201 East 12th Street.All elementary schools in the district will hold a “Meet Your Teacher” event from 8 to 9 a.m. Monday. Students and their families can drop off school supplies and get to know teachers before school starts Tuesday. Students and families can attend Durango High School’s Open House and Activities Rush Night from 6 to 8 p.m. Sept. 1 at the high school. This is an opportunity to meet teachers, coaches and administrators. Durango High School booster passes for the 2016-17 sports season are on sale through the Booster Club. The passes allow access to all DHS sporting events that have a gate fee and provide the ability to skip long entry lines. Fifty percent of profits from booster passes go directly to athletic programs. To purchase a pass, visit dhs.durangoschools.org to download the order form. Passes will also be available at during Activities Rush Night on Sept. 1 at Durango High School.

Durango library offers free online K-12 tutoring

Friends of the Durango Public Library is providing access to live, online tutoring from Tutor.com from 3 to 10 p.m. daily or the remainder of 2016.

By signing in with a library card from any computer or device with internet access, students can connect with a tutor. The one-on-one sessions are open to all K-12 students free of charge. Spanish-speaking tutors are available.

Animas High School to hold orientations

Animas High School will provide several orientations and other student activities next week.

Student Orientation for all ninth-grade students will be held from 8:20 a.m. to 3:20 p.m. Monday.

Seniors will meet at 6:30 a.m. Tuesday at the base of the ABC Trail for Senior Sunrise.

Students in all grades will be at Fort Lewis College for orientation activities from 8:20 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesday. Students should meet at the Smith Sports Complex for drop-off and pick-up.

All grades will be on the AHS campus for orientation activities from 8:20 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Aug. 24.

Manna culinary program seeks tuition sponsors

The Culinary Program at Manna Soup Kitchen is seeking tuition sponsors for low-income students in its 16-week entry-level course.

The majority of students can’t afford the class on their own, and many hope to better their economic status by completing the program and gaining employment in the food industry.

People or businesses interested in sponsoring these students can cover either all or a portion of the tuition.

Columbine Christian School, private preschool, elementary and middle school in Durango, is currently enrolling new students for the 2016-17 academic year.
