Fundraiser to benefit children’s center

Riverhouse Children’s Center will host the sixth annual Cheers for Children event to raise money for early childhood education from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at the Glacier Club.

Proceeds from Cheers for Children will directly benefit Riverhouse Children’s Center and contribute toward its goal of providing $40,000 in subsidies to low-income families in the community.

Tickets are $40 per person or $75 per couple. The evening will include tastings of wines, appetizers, spirits sampling, live music, a photo booth and a silent auction.

Auction items include a five-night stay in Punta Mita, Mexico; zip-line passes; a Telluride weekend getaway package; a variety of art and photography; restaurant gift certificates and more.

Kids can learn mindfulness at camp

An Art of Mindfulness Kids Camp will be offered to children ages 6 to 12.

Each day, kids will rotate through mindfulness, yoga, theater, creative writing and visual art classes taught by Joanne Hibbard, Joy Kilpatrick, Rachel Turiel and Bonnie Ward.

Two sessions will be held from 8:45 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 22-25 or Aug. 17-20. Sibling discounts will be available as well as scholarships. Space is limited.

Mountain Middle kids to begin internships

All eighth-grade students at Mountain Middle School will participate in internships from May 11 to May 15.

They will have an exhibition June 1 at the Fort Lewis College Ballroom to display and defend what they learned during their internships.

Kyle Edmondson’s statistics students will host a community forum called “Beyond Standardization: Accountability in a Project-Based Model” at 5 p.m. Wednesday in the Jesse Hutt Wing of AHS. The students have been exploring the issues surrounding assessment and accountability with attention to the role standardized tests play. Matt Dooley’s ninth-grade humanities classes will present two performances of Shakespeare’s comedy “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” at 5 and 6 p.m. Wednesday in the AHS Commons.

The All-School Exhibition will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at AHS. The exhibition will include a poetry cafe, Spanish-language food carts, science projects and more as students in all grades present their learning across disciplines. Incoming Head of School Sean Woytek will be available at the exhibition to meet and greet students and families.

AHS Osprey Week will be held from Monday to May 17. All students will participate in faculty-led adventures ranging from backcountry skiing to service work in mixed grade-level groups. For more information, visit http://ospreyweek2015.weebly.com.

Home-school program enrolling students

Pine River Community Learning Center’s 2015-16 home-school enrichment program will hold open enrollment until May 28.

The center offers classes, field trips, tutoring and standardized testing free of charge for home-school families in the program.

Child care providers can obtain licenses

The Early Childhood Council of La Plata County, in collaboration with Southwest Colorado Child Care Resource & Referral, will offer classes for people interested in becoming licensed home child care providers in Colorado.

Pre-licensing will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 13 and June 20 at The Early Childhood Training Center in Durango. The cost is $80.

Florida Mesa invites you to Coffee Talks

Florida Mesa will host its Coffee Talks from 7:20 to 7:40 a.m. every Wednesday.

Participants will have a chance to visit teachers and staff members. There will be coffee and breakfast items.

DHS students can get their teeth checked

Durango High School’s School Based Heath Center will offer a dental clinic Friday for students who are in need of a dental cleaning, fluoride and sealants.

If any restorative work is needed, a follow-up visit will be scheduled at Smile Makers. Only a certain number of appointments are available.

Recover credits at summer school

Durango High School will offer summer school from June 8 to July 3.

Students may take summer school courses only if they have previously failed a course and need to recover credit.

All courses will be computer-based using an online educational system called APEX. English, math, science and social studies core academic classes will be available.

Fees must be paid before a student can enroll in the course, and all courses taken during summer school must be completed by July 3. If courses are not completed, course fees will not be refunded and students will need to retake the failed course during the next school year.

DHS to graduate senior class May 29

Durango High School graduation will be held at 6 p.m. May 29 at the DHS stadium.

9-R’s Shared School taking applications

Durango School District 9-R’s Shared School Program is taking applications for the 2015-16 school year.

The shared school program is designed for home-school families and offers classes such as art, music, drama computer, physical education and Spanish.

Elementary classes (kindergarten to fifth grade) will meet from 8:45 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Middle school classes (sixth to eighth grade) will meet from 8:15 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesdays.

The district is considering expanding the middle school program to two days a week for the upcoming school year. All classes will meet at Miller Middle School.

DHS counselors to talk with parents

Durango High School parents are invited to “Coffee with the Counselors” from 8:15 to 9 a.m. Wednesday.

Counselors will be available to speak with participants, answer questions and address concerns.

DHS compiling scholarship winners

The Durango High School counseling office is compiling a list of the scholarships that students have received.

This information needs to be delivered to the counseling office or emailed to csmith3@durango.k12.co.us: Student’s name, name of the scholarship or program, amount being awarded, a copy of the letter offering the scholarship and the name of the school the student will attend in the fall.

This information must be received no later than Friday to be included in the Senior Academic Awards Night.

ACT test is June 13, register by Friday

National ACT testing will be held June 13.

Registration is needed by Friday. The exam is the final ACT national test for this school year. The next national testing date in Colorado will be in October.

Bike rodeo wheels into Fort Lewis Mesa

The Fort Lewis Mesa Elementary School Bike Rodeo will be held Friday.

Children may bring their bike to school that day. They are welcome to leave it on the stage in the morning for use during their physical-education class.

Students need to put a label with their name on their bike and indicate if they are willing to share with other students throughout the day.

9-R invites public to budget meeting

Durango School District 9-R will host a public budget meeting at 6:30 p.m. May 13 at Miller Middle School.

Community members, parents and staff members are invited.

Know Your Dough lifts financial literacy

Know Your Dough, a nonprofit that provides financial literacy programs for local youths and young adults, will bring “The Money Game” to Miller Middle School the week of May 19.

The program is linked to the Colorado Academic Standards for personal finances.

Know Your Dough also is hosting a program at Riverview Elementary School for fourth-graders. Park Elementary School fifth-graders participated in the program from April 21 to May 5.

Sponsors for these programs are needed and appreciated.

DHS groups to play at year-end concert

Durango High School’s End of the Year Concert will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the DHS auditorium. The concert will include band, jazz band and orchestra.
