Mountain Middle announces events
Mountain Middle School will host these events:
The seventh-grade math/science class will exhibit “Why is the Animas River an Important Resource?” from 4:30 to 6 p.m. today at Durango Discovery Museum, 1333 Camino del Rio. This project focuses on the water-quality index of the Animas River as it flows through Durango. Topics will include atoms and atomic structure, atomic bonding, the periodic table, the water molecule, the water-quality index, geography of the Animas River watershed and factors that affect stream quality.
The eighth-grade humanities class will exhibit “Kit Carson: Hero or Villain?” from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at La Plata County Courthouse, 1060 East Second Ave. Topics will include privilege and oppression during the time of the Civil War and today as well as verbal and written rhetoric.
The sixth-grade will present “The Rabbit-Hole and the Looking-Glass Exhibition” from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Nov. 21 at Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave. The sixth-graders will present their personal connection to the books Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass by Lewis Carroll. Students will be answering the questions: “Where are you in Alice’s journey?” and “What’s down your rabbit hole?”

9-R superintendent round table set for today
The Durango School District 9-R Superintendent Round Table will be held at 6 p.m. today at Park Elementary School, 623 E. Fifth St.
Colorado voters did not approve Amendment 66, and 9-R, as well as other school districts throughout the state, continue to face challenges in funding shortfalls.
During the past five years, 9-R has lost millions in state per-pupil revenue but has been able to maintain current instructional programs and teacher salaries through the 3A mill levy. The district will need to achieve cuts in the coming year to balance the budget and ensure that it operates within current revenue limits.
9-R winter sports to begin today
Durango School District 9-R winter sports, which include boys basketball, girls basketball, girls swimming and wrestling, will begin today.
A red card must be issued to each athlete in order to be cleared to participate today. The parent, athlete and coach meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Monday in the Main Gym.
Durango school board to meet Tuesday
The Durango School District 9-R Board of Education will meet at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in the board room of the 9-R Administration Building, 201 E. 12th St.
The school highlight will be Fort Lewis Mesa Elementary, and newly elected board members will be sworn in.
Special-education committee to meet
The Special Education Advisory Committee invites parents, educators and community members to learn more about advocating for students with special needs in the school system at its meeting at 5:15 p.m. Nov. 20 on the third floor of the Durango School District 9-R administration building, 201 E. 12th St.

Riverview collecting used cellphones
Riverview Elementary School is collecting used cellphones. The collection period will run through Nov. 29.
When people donate to the Cell Phones for Soldiers program, they will provide troops with free calling cards to stay connected with their loved ones. Gently-used cellphones can be donated to the school, 2900 Mesa Ave.

Elementary schools in Durango School District 9-R will host these Thanksgiving meals:
Animas Valley Elementary: kindergarten and first grade from 11 to 11:30 a.m. Nov. 20; second and third grade from 11:40 to 12:10 p.m.; and fourth and fifth grade from 12:15 to 12:45 p.m.
Florida Mesa Elementary: Preschool at 10:45 a.m. Nov. 21; kindergarten and first grade at 11 a.m.; Headstart at 11:30 a.m.; second and third grades at 11:45 a.m.; and fourth and fifth grades at 12:30 p.m.
Fort Lewis Mesa Elementary: Prekindergarten to second grade at 11:15 a.m. Nov. 22; and third, fourth and fifth grades at 12:15 p.m.
Park Elementary: Preschool and kindergarten from 10:45 to 11:15 a.m. Nov. 21; first grade from 11:15 to 11:45 a.m.; second grade from 11:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.; third grade from 12:15 to 12:45 p.m.; and fourth and fifth grades from 12:45 to 1:15 p.m.

Animas Valley to host Turkey Trot
Animas Valley Elementary School will host its Turkey Trot on Nov. 20 with these events:
Fourth and fifth grades will gather for a song at 10:10 a.m. in the gym.
Warm up for the Turkey Trot will take place at 10:20 a.m.
The Turkey Trot for kindergarten to second grade will take place from 10:30 to 10:45 a.m. on the soccer field.
The Turkey Trot for third to fifth grades will be held from 10:30 to 10:45 a.m. on the Nature Trail
The Turkey Trot will end at 10:45 a.m.
Continuing education available at FLC
The Fort Lewis College Continuing Education Program will offer these courses:
“Getting Paid to Talk: Make Money with Your Voice – An Introduction to Professional Voice-Overs” will be held from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Nov. 20. Participants will learn about the voice-over industry and opportunities for working in television, film, radio, audio books, documentaries and the Internet. Basics will be covered, and people will have a chance to record a commercial script under the direction of a Voicecoaches producer. The cost is $54 for one class. The registration deadline is noon Thursday.
CDL exams are available by appointment in Durango through FLC Continuing Education, a third-party testing unit for the state of Colorado. Licensed examiners administer class A, B and C exams at a cost of $225. This is for the exam only, not classes, and people must provide their own vehicle.

Baccalaureate program to be discussed
Miller Middle School and Atlas at Durango High School will host a “Coffee, Tea and IB (International Baccalaureate)” from 8:15 to 9:15 a.m. Tuesday in Room 173 at Miller Middle School.
This is a drop-in format. Participants should bring questions, concerns and feedback. Light refreshments will be served.

Needham taking orders for coupon books
Needham Elementary School is taking pre-orders for the 2014 Be Local Coupon Book.
All proceeds raised from coupon-book sales at Needham, will help support field trips, book purchases and other educational tools that support the students’ International Baccalaureate education.
The coupon books are $18 plus tax and pre-payment is required. The coupon books will be available for pre-order through Nov. 22.

Fort Lewis Mesa to host Thanksgiving program
The Thanksgiving celebrations at Fort Lewis Mesa will begin Nov. 22 with an orchestra presentation at 10 a.m. in the gym, followed by the Turkey Trot at 10:15 a.m.
Financial aid for college to be discussed Dec. 10
The Fort Lewis College Office of Financial Aid will present “Financial Aid 101: How to Pay for College” from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Dec. 10 at the Durango High School Library.
The free financial-aid presentation will have information about how to submit the Free Application for Federal Aid, information about the different types of financial aid available, and an opportunity to ask questions about the financial-aid process.
Needham to host Scholastic Book Fair
Needham Elementary School will host its annual Scholastic Book Fair from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. today and Thursday, and from 8:30 a.m. to noon Friday in the school’s library.
The fair will feature easy readers, picture books, chapter books, mystery books, adventure/fantasy books and holiday books.

Nonprofit to offer class about speaking, listening
Colorado Lifework, a nonprofit, will offer “Listen and Speaking with Presence!” from 9:30 to 3:30 p.m. Nov. 23 in the conference room at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 910 East Third Ave.
The cost is $40 and includes a book and materials. Participants will learn and practice dialogue.

Community college to debut learning labs
