District 9-R schools to be closed Monday
All Durango School District 9-R schools will be closed Monday to observe Labor Day.
After-school program offers waiting list
Because of high participation levels, the Durango School District 9-R Kids’ Camp offers a waiting list.
Currently, the program is full at these schools on these days of the week:
Riverview Elementary School is full Monday to Thursday.
Park Elementary School is full Monday to Friday.
Needham Elementary School is full Mondays and Thursdays.
The district is seeking more Kids’ Camp aides to take on more students in the after-school program.
Until then, people can request to be added to the waiting list by calling Audra Snow at 247-5411, ext. 1469, or emailing asnow@durango.k12.co.us.

Durango School District 9-R schools will host these open houses to introduce teachers and staff members:
Durango High School from 6 to 8 p.m. Sept. 4.
Sunnyside Elementary School from 5 to 7 p.m. Sept. 8.
Florida Mesa Elementary School from 6 to 7 p.m. Sept. 9.
Fort Lewis Mesa Elementary School from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Sept. 10.
Big Picture High School from 5 to 7 p.m. Sept. 10.
Animas Valley Elementary School from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Sept. 15.
Escalante Middle School from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Sept. 17.
Miller Middle School from 5 to 7 p.m. Sept. 17.
Needham Elementary School from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Sept. 18.
Riverview Elementary School from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Sept. 18.
Ignacio High School to open new field
A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new Ignacio High School football/soccer field will be held Sept. 5.
This will be the first home football game. The ceremony will begin at 6 p.m.
Parking is limited because of construction. The entrance to the field will be between the wood shop and the old administration building, which is now Ignacio Academy.
College Fair to be held at Durango High School
A College Fair will take place from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Sept. 9 at Durango High School.
Organized by the Colorado Council, these fairs are held every fall at high schools or colleges. This fair is geared toward high school students and their parents, and it attracts participants who are eager to learn about college curricula, admission requirements and financial aid.
Attendance is free. Students should register at www.GoToCollegeFairs.com and print a barcode to bring to the fair.
DHS to host meeting about theater program
A meeting about the theater program will be held at 4 p.m. today at Durango High School.
This is a meeting for all students interested in joining the theater/drama group.
College names committee member
Southwest Colorado Community College welcomes Laura Lewis Marchino to the college’s Advisory Committee.
Currently, Marchino serves as the assistant director of the Region 9 Economic Development District of Southwest Colorado.
She has a bachelor’s degree in journalism and mass communications and an Master of Business Administration from Colorado State University.
Marchino has been on the National Association of Development Organization’s Board of Directors since 2009.
She is chairwoman of the Durango School District Accountability Committee and serves on the Mercy Home Health and Hospice Advisory Board and the Boys & Girls Club of La Plata County Board. Marchino just completed her third year as chairwoman of the Colorado Association of Regional Organizations.
Before her work with Region 9, she was the executive director of Operation Healthy Communities.
She was a member of the Leadership La Plata Class in 2002-03 and has lived in Durango since 1990.
Poster contest open to middle schoolers
The Consumer Product Safety Commission will host a poster contest about carbon-monoxide safety.
Middle school students are invited to draw a poster about the dangers of carbon monoxide and what people can do to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning and enter it into the contest at www.cpsc.gov/COContest.
The award will be $500 to the top 10 finalists and another $1,000 will go to the grand prize winner. Students in sixth, seventh and eighth grades can enter.
The contest runs through February 2015.
