DHS teams receive academic nominations

These Durango High School students received Team Academic Nominations for the Les Schwab Academic Team Championship Award for Spring 2014-2015:

Kyrsten Holle graduates from CSU

Kyrsten Hope Holle graduated from Colorado State University College of Natural Sciences on May 16.

Holle received a Bachelor of Science degree in zoology with a minor in conservation biology.

Holle is a 2011 graduate of Bayfield High School and is the daughter of Jim and Melanie Holle of Bayfield.

DHS students receive recognition

These Durango High School 11th- and 12th-grade students received Academic All-State – First Team Criteria for having a 3.60 GPA and above:

Chamblee offered research position

Lindsay Chamblee, a Fort Lewis College student, was offered a summer student research position at Cornell University in the engineering department (Cornell High Energy Synchrotron Source).

Chamblee’s research will focus on “Investigating Structural Materials Using High Energy Synchrotron X-rays.” She will graduate next year from FLC in engineering.

Nicole Pease receives degree

Nicole Pease of Durango received a Bachelor of Arts degree from St. John’s College in Annapolis, Maryland, on May 10.

St. John’s College, with campuses in Annapolis and Santa Fe, offers interdisciplinary curriculum based on the reading and study of the works that have shaped Western civilization.

Locals finish physician assistant program

The University of St. Francis graduated students Emily Havener and Molly Hummel of Durango from its Master of Physician Assistant Studies program offered at its Albuquerque campus. Commencement ceremonies were April 25.

Physician assistants are health-care professionals licensed to practice medicine with physician supervision. Physician assistants provide patients with services ranging from primary care to specialized surgical care.

The University of St. Francis program in Physician Assistant Studies is fully accredited Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant, Inc.

Local FLC students study abroad

These local Fort Lewis College students studied abroad during the spring semester as a part of several international opportunities:

Kalen Dear of Durango studied at University of St. Andrews in St. Andrews, Scotland. Dear also received a USAC scholarship.

Ruthie Edd of Bayfield studied at American University of Sharjah in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates. Edd also received the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship.

Chahlie McDonald of Ignacio studied at Charles Darwin University in Darwin, Australia.

Isabella Milton of Durango studied at Universidad del PaíVasco in San Sebastiá, Spain.

Caleb Rael of Durango studied at University of Basque in Vitoria, Spain.

Christopher VanDyck of Durango studied at University of the Ryukyus in Okinawa, Japan. VanDyck also received the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship and a scholarship from the Japan Student Services Organization.

Steven Byrnes receives degree

Steven Patrick Byrnes of Durango received his degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in ceremonies May 8 and 9.

Byrnes earned a Master of Business Administration from the Graduate Studies.

FLC students receive nominations

These local Fort Lewis College students have been nominated to Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges:

Nominees have excelled as members of the FLC community to such a degree that they should be acknowledged as exceptional student leaders. Their contributions in leadership, service, campus activities and academic achievement set them apart from others as models to follow.

Cole Mystrom receives scholarship

Bayfield Association for the Advancement of Music announces the recipient of a $500 scholarship is Cole Mystrom.

BAAM awarded Mystrom this scholarship for his hard work, determination and future goals of advancing his musical career. Mystrom has proved his dedication to music throughout his high school career. He is the son of Kelly and Chris Mystrom and is planning to attend Colorado University in the fall.

Becca Schaldach joins engineering program

Becca Schaldach, a rising senior at Animas High School, has been selected to participate in the Union College Educating Girls for Engineering Program in Schenectady, New York, this summer.

EDGE is a two-week residential program for select high school girls from across the country. Becca will be one of 22 girls accepted into this program, which combines real-life college learning and living experiences with a unifying theme of “Toys and Tools for Children with Special Needs.” Schaldach will have the opportunity to apply the engineering design process to adapt toys and tools for physically disabled children. The program illustrates the humanitarian aspects of engineering and focuses on developing technologies to enhance learning activities and communication skills of children with special needs.

The Fort Lewis College School of Arts and Sciences held its annual Undergraduate Research & Creative Activities Symposium on April 23. These student participants were selected by their departments to represent the best undergraduate research and performances done at FLC this year, either in oral or poster presentations:

Madeigh Winsor named to honor roll

Madeigh Winsor of Hesperus was named to the 2015 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Academic Honor Roll.

Winsor’s major is elementary education. To qualify, student-athletes must have a GPA of 3.30 or better, be using a season of eligibility and have completed two consecutive semesters or three quarters at their current institution. The student-athlete’s cumulative GPA is what they had earned after the fall semester.

Allen Crawford receives scholarship

Allen Crawford of Colorado Connections Academy in Hesperus, has received the 2015-2016 Civilian Marksmanship Program Youth Scholarship, presented by the Civilian Marksmanship Program.

Crawford will receive a one-year, $1,000 scholarship from CMP based on marksmanship participation, grade point average and merit, to be used towards a pursuit of higher education. Eligible applicants were graduating seniors from JROTC, high school, club or 4-H programs who participated in marksmanship programs and also excelled both academically and within their communities.

The program is a national organization dedicated to the respect for and safe handling of firearms and instilling patriotism and discipline in its youth participants.

Jillian Wenburg receives degree

Jillian Leigh Wenburg received her Doctor of Philosophy degree in English with emphases in American Literature and History at the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Missouri-Kansas City on May 16.

Her interdisciplinary dissertation work focused on Nebraska author Mari Sandoz. She currently teaches for the writing program at Fort Lewis College.

El Diablo students receive honors

These El Diablo student newspaper writers and photographers have been honored with Journalism Excellence Awards from the Colorado High School Press Association:

Lilah Slaughter received honorable mention for her story “Finding alternatives for reliance on cell phones.”

Lydia Thompson received third place for her photo series that covered an ALS ice bucket challenge.

Lucas Robbins received second place for his sports feature “I can’t wait to be back on the road again...or can I? DHS Athletes faced with hardships of traveling.”

Braden Higby received second place for her lifestyle coverage story “Pot issues not so black and white at DHS.”

Jessi Salka and Kylie Cobb received second place for their alternative coverage treatment of Art Chart design and content.

Katie Milliet receive first place for her photo essay “Silhouettes and Sunsets.”

Seth Marvin Vanderryn received first-place for general column writing, which included his sports columns “Fantasy Football: More than a game” and “NFL’s man of the year” and the opinion column titled “Keep education uncensored: Bad history is still history.”

Park teachers, staff acknowledged with lunch

For Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week, the realty program Heroes Home Advantage and Home Slice Pizza provided lunch to all teachers and staff of Park Elementary School.

May is Heroes Appreciation Month for Heroes Home Advantage.
