FLC announces new mobile app
Fort Lewis College announces its new mobile app.
The app is free and will be available for Apple, Android and Windows devices. The app makes it easier to access information about FLC and is useful for faculty, staff members and students, as well as the community.
Community members can take advantage of the app to find out about college events, news and sports, including campus maps, directions and parking information.
The app can be downloaded for free by searching for “Fort Lewis College” in the Google Play Store, iTunes or Windows Store.
Mountain Middle to host exhibition
Mountain Middle School’s seventh-grade humanities and science classes will host a combined exhibition of learning called “Ancient Greece Meets Modern Science” from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the school.
Seventh-graders have written persuasive essays to defend their ancient city-state of choice, along with comparing and contrasting Athens’ and Sparta’s government, economy, military and historical contributions.
Students also will explain why an organism, with specific traits, will or will not survive in a given environment. They have studied genetics, heredity, DNA and chromosomes. They have created a timeline that reflects the technological and physiological changes affecting humans from the Neanderthal era to ancient Greece.
School’s DECA group to attend conference
Durango High School DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America) is an organization for emerging leaders in marketing, management, finance, hospitality, fashion and entrepreneurship.
The school’s DECA recently qualified six members to attend the DECA International Career Development Conference from April 24 to April 29 in Orlando, Florida.
DHS is seeking financial support from people and the business community to sponsor enrichment activities, while students compete in their events at the conference.

Nature Studies to host camp next week
Durango Nature Studies’ Spring Break Camp has a few spaces available.
The camp will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. from Monday to March 27 on the second floor of the Smiley Building, 1309 East Third Ave.
The camp will include nature field trips and is open to students in first to third grades. People are invited to register for the whole week or for specific days.
Topics will include “Dessert Before Dinner” on Monday; “Ancestral Puebloan Archeology” on Tuesday; “Bird is the Word” on Wednesday; “Flowers and Fruit” on Thursday; and “Origins of the Animas” on Friday.

Training available to managers at FLC
The Fort Lewis College Continuing Education Program will offer “Professional Development for Managers: Managing with Respect and Reason” from 6 to 8:30 p.m. beginning April 16, followed by an all-day training April 18 and four more Wednesday classes.
This is an 18-hour training that helps managers develop a leadership style that encourages and empowers people they supervise. This course provides managers with the skills necessary to keep staff members accountable and engaged. Trainings are interactive and experiential, and they are designed for frontline to middle managers who manage people and projects and have at least six months of experience in a management role. Advance registration is required. The cost is $1,400.

Mary Micikas of Durango received a Master of Science in nursing from the Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of nursing of Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, on Dec. 20, 2014.

9-R school board to meet March 31
Durango School District 9-R Board of Education will meet at 5:30 p.m. March 31 in the district office building, 201 E. 12th.
Volunteers needed for boys conference
Durango School District 9-R needs 30 to 40 volunteers for its second annual “Keys to High School Success ... and Beyond!” conference for eighth-grade boys who will enter high school next school year.
Boys will explore topics around advocacy, healthy relationships and positive self-image.
Volunteers are needed to help with the conference, which will be held from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. May 7.

Music in the Mountains to perform for students
Florida Mesa Elementary School will view a performance by Music in the Mountains at 8 a.m. Thursday in the gym.
Florida Mesa to host Coffee Talk
Florida Mesa Elementary School will host “Coffee Talk” from 7:20 to 7:40 a.m. every Wednesday in the front lobby.
Parents will receive coffee, breakfast and ideas for working with children at home in reading and math.
During March the talks will focus on math.
9-R seeking comments about quality of schools
The Durango School District 9-R Board of Education is seeking community members’ comments about school quality.
The board will host an open forum at 5 p.m. April 7 in the board room at the district office building, 201 E. 12th St.
The five indicators that will drive the conversation are quality learners, quality environment, quality content, quality processes and quality outcomes.
Escalante to host T-shirt fundraiser
The Escalante Middle School Parent Organization is launching a T-shirt fundraising campaign.
The school’s goals are to raise money to repair its low ropes course and add ways to build school spirit.
Additionally, the organization is offering mini-grants for teachers to help pay for supplies not covered by the Durango School District 9-R budget.

ACT testing to take place June 13; register by May 8
The national ACT testing will take place on June 13. Registration for this test date is needed May 8.
The final ACT national test of this school year will be June 13. The next national testing date in Colorado is in October 2015.
