Local students named to honor roll
At the close of the 2012-13 academic year, Northeastern Junior College in Sterling, recognized these local students for their academic achievements:
Mariah Connor of Hesperus was honored for making the president’s list honor roll.
Brittany Stevens of Hesperus was honored for making the vice president’s list honor roll.
Students were honored during several celebratory banquets and award nights.

Scott Wilson receives masters
Scott Thomas Wilson has graduated from the University of Denver with a Master of Arts in forensic psychology.
He is a 2006 graduate of Durango High School and received a Bachelor of Arts (magna cum laude) in psychology from Fort Lewis College in 2011.
Wilson is the son of Kelly and Valerie Wilson of Durango.
Keanna Smith presents at Simmental Classic
Keanna Smith of Ignacio presented at American Junior Simmental Association Western Regional Classic hosted by the Utah Simmental Association from June 24 to 26 in Logan, Utah.
Attendees competed in educational contests aimed at further developing communication skills, leadership, cattle knowledge and passion for the industry.
Smith finished first in the Cattleman’s Quiz, second in Sales Talk, seventh in judging and third overall. She competed against 30 other junior competitors during the three day event.
Smith and Ms. Better Foundation, a Simmental influenced heifer, placed second in her class and fifth overall out of 21 Simmental influenced heifers in the cattle show.

Durango Arts Center is offering camps
Durango Arts Center, 802 East Second Ave., will host these camps:
“Around the World in Five Days” for children ages 5 to 7 will be held from 9 a.m. to noon July 15 to 19. The cost is $125 per session. Participants will learn about totem poles from the Pacific Northwest, Australian bark painting, Chinese print-making, mosaics from the Middle East, and the art of Africa.
“Learn to Draw Realistically” for children ages 10 to 14 will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. July 15 to 19. The cost is $90 per session. Participants will study the techniques used by professional artists to draw realistically.
“Art Camps: Arting Around” for children ages 6 to 10 will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 29 to Aug. 1. The cost is $180 per session. Students will explore several art mediums including paper making, plaster casting, tile mosaics and painting with acrylics.
“Filmmakers Wanted: The Making of a Short Film” for children ages 12 to 18 will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 22 to Aug. 16. The cost is $975. Participants will learn about filmmaking while writing a screenplay, acting, filming, editing and producing a short film.

The main office is closed for the summer. The school’s summer switchboard will handle all inquires and messages at 247-2474.
Parents should attend these mandatory parent orientation nights from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.: Ninth grade on Aug. 6; 10th grade on Aug. 8; 11th grade on Aug. 13; and 12th grade on Aug. 15. Parents should bring their son or daughter. Participants will meet faculty and staff members; learn about the college counseling department and curriculum; review AHS policies and procedures; and more. Parents who have more than one student at AHS, should attend each appropriate event as some information will be grade-specific.
