Mountain Middle School to open enrollment

Mountain Middle School announces enrollment registration for incoming sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders will be open from Jan. 5 to Feb. 28.

The enrollment lottery will be held March 4.

Medical professionals can learn Spanish

Southwest Colorado Community College will offer a one-semester Spanish language course for medical professionals at Mercy Regional Medical Center.

The three-credit class will meet once a week from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays from Jan. 21 to May 13.

The college designed the curriculum to benefit a variety of medical professionals, including unit clerks, nurse aides, nurses, doctors and people working in radiology, physical therapy and other allied health fields.

Students will focus on learning the vocabulary necessary to help them communicate with Spanish-speaking patients.

The class is open to the public, and the college is currently enrolling for the spring semester.

9-R school board to meet Dec. 16

The Durango School District 9-R School Board will meet at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 16 in the board room at the administration building, 201 E. 12th St.

Florida Mesa and Sunnyside elementary schools will be highlighted.

9-R seeks comments on academic calendar

Durango School District 9-R is requesting comments about options for the 2015-16 academic calendar.

While the district can’t accommodate every request, staff members will listen to comments and take them into consideration.

Durango district to host community forum

Durango School District 9-R Superintendent Dan Snowberger will host a community forum from 6 to 8 p.m. Jan. 22 at Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave.

Participants will learn the facts about assessment mandates required by law and how the district is working with teachers to implement the required bills and support teachers and students along the way.

Participants also will see how the School Vault works and how it supports teachers and students.

School fair to be held at Fort Lewis College

A school fair will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. Jan. 14 in the Fort Lewis College Ballroom.

Durango has many educational opportunities available to students.

Representatives from all Durango School District 9-R schools as well as charter, parochial and private schools will attend.

Participants also will be able to learn more about the new charter school and school-based health center options.

Miller Middle to host fundraiser Feb. 23

Miller Middle School’s school-wide fundraiser, The Miller Angel Games, will be held Feb. 23 on the Miller football field.

Students will divide into teams representing different countries and compete in relays and games.

Before the games, students will collect donations from family, friends and neighbors to raise money to help provide new programs, technology and service- and action-oriented projects with a student focus.

The fundraising goal is $15,000. There are corporate sponsorship opportunities available for this event that carry on throughout the calendar year.

Durango boys conference seeking volunteers

Durango School District 9-R needs 30 to 40 volunteers for its second annual “Keys to High School Success … And Beyond!” conference for eighth-grade boys who are about to transition to high school.

The boys will explore topics around advocacy, healthy relationships and positive self-image. Through interactive workshops, students will gain skills in these areas.

Volunteers are needed to help with the conference, which will be held from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. May 7.
