Applications available for improvement awards

The Early Childhood Council of La Plata County, a recipient of the Infant and Toddler Quality and Availability Grant, is accepting applications from licensed child care programs (homes and centers) in La Plata County serving infants and toddlers.

The available awards include:

An expansion grant to increase child care slots for children ages 0-3 through one-time capacity expansion funding of $5,000 to $20,000.

Mini-grants of $600 to $1,000 to increase quality care through ratings and incentives for classrooms serving children age 0-3.

Family Child Care Home Grants to increase infant and toddler slots in La Plata County by offering start-up costs for new Family Home Providers of $600 to $1,000. Prelicensing training and mini-grants are available.

Continuing education available at FLC

Fort Lewis College’s Continuing Education Program will offer these courses:

“Wines of Italy” with Alan Cuenca will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Nov. 6. Cuenca will discuss choosing Italian wines, and students will taste six from Italy’s most famed and unique appellations. The cost is $39 for one class including wine, cheese, crackers and apples.

“A Hand is Not a Turkey: A Drawing Class for the Artistically Wounded (or Broken-’art’ed)” will be offered by Brenda Macon on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from Nov. 5-14. Macon will help students break down drawing and “seeing” skills into manageable parts. By the end, people will draw multi-dimensional renderings of many objects. The cost is $99 for four classes.

Animas High School announces events

Animas High School will host these events:

The Spanish Department will have a joint exhibition to celebrate the Latin American festival Day of the Dead from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Nov. 4 at Sacred Heart Church Parish Hall, 254 East Fifth Ave. The exhibition will include: Susan Raleigh’s Spanish 1 students, who will share their “Libro de Cara de Calavera” – Facebook page profiles; David Haffeman’s Spanish 1 sophomore class, which will read poems in honor of ancestors and display figurines and other artwork to represent the characters in their poems; Janae Hunderman’s Spanish 2 classes, which will celebrate the lives of their loved ones who have passed; and Crystal Pennington’s Spanish 3 class, which will host storytelling, including videos, storybooks and more to retell some of the folktales from Latin cultures.

The next parent coffee will take place from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Nov. 19 at Carver Brewing Co., 1022 Main Ave. All parents are welcome.

Durango 9-R schools to be closed Nov. 11

All Durango School District 9-R schools will be closed Nov. 11 in observance of Veterans Day.

Winter sports to begin Nov. 13

Winter sports including boys basketball, girls basketball, girls swimming and wrestling will begin Nov. 13.

The activities office will accept paperwork and participation fees for these sports from Oct. 21 to Nov. 12. A red card must be issued to each athlete in order to be cleared to participate Nov. 13.

The Winter Parent, Athlete, Coach meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Nov. 18 in the main gym.

Big Picture to host blood drive Tuesday

Durango Big Picture High School will conduct a blood drive in conjunction with United Blood Services from 2:45 to 4:45 p.m. Tuesday.

Big Picture to host haunted house, dinner

Durango Big Picture High School will present its second annual haunted house and chili dinner from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. today and Thursday at 215 E. 12th St.

The cost is $3 for students, $5 in advance and $6 for tickets at the door. Proceeds will benefit Big Picture High School student projects. Kids 9 and older are welcome.

Riverview to collect used cellphones

Riverview Elementary School will collect used cellphones from Nov. 4 to 29.

People who donate to the Cell Phones for Soldiers program will provide troops with free calling cards to stay connected with their loved ones.

Gently-used cellphones can be dropped off at the school, 2900 Mesa Ave.

Needham students complete learning unit

Third-graders at Needham Elementary School will inquire about the various states of matter Thursday as the culmination of their International Baccalaureate unit “How the World Works.”

Students, with the support of parent volunteers, will conduct 11 experiments investigating the various states of matter and changes to those states.

Park Elementary to host Thanksgiving meal

Park Elementary School invites families to join students Nov. 21 for the school’s Thanksgiving Feast.

The lunch menu will feature roasted turkey, roasted potatoes and vegetables, gravy, whole wheat roll, pumpkin cake, fresh fruit and milk. Park will serve lunch at these times:

Preschool and kindergarten from 10:45 to 11:15 a.m.

First grade from 11:15 to 11:45 a.m.

Second grade from 11:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.

Third grade from 12:15 to 12:45 p.m.

Fourth and fifth-grades from 12:45 to 1:15 p.m.

Cash or check payments will be accepted at the door. Student lunches will be applied to their school lunch count. Lunch will be $4 for adults and $2.45 for children.

Title VII advisory meeting to be held

A meeting to discuss and plan Title VII special events will take place at 5:30 p.m. today in Durango High School, room 2070.

Dinner will be provided.
