Miller Middle School sent eight seventh-grade students to the final round of competition at the Colorado Science and Engineering Fair with two second place finishes, three honorable mentions and two special awards.
The second place finishes were in the categories of microbiology and molecular biology with Eliot Wright winning for his project “Proteomic Approach to UV/HNO3 Deamination Mutagenesis Antibiotic Resist Moner.” Georgia Mynatt took second in health and medicine for her project “Does the Shirt on Your Back Stop the Sun’s Attack?”.
Honorable mentions were in the category of plant sciences with Sofia Bader’s project “Is the Grass Greener?,” Isabelle Washburn in the category of Math and Computer Sciences with “All A’board” and Bailey Freeman in the category of Energy with “Capture That Ray.”
Aiden Quayle was awarded the Pioneers of Science Award for “Coffee Cup Conundrum” and Eliot Wright was recognized by the Colorado Biology Teachers’ Association. Other finalists included Paul Knight with “The Power of Suggestion” and Sydney DeLacey with “The Heat of Attraction.”
The second annual Fort Lewis College “Celebration of Academic Achievement,” where departments choose one outstanding student from each major who exemplifies success in the field of study, will take place Friday.
These local students were chosen:
