Exchange program seeks host families for students
ASSE International Student Exchange Programs is seeking host families for international high school boys and girls.
These students are 15 to 18 years old and are coming to this area for the upcoming high school year or semester.
The exchange students arrive from their home country shortly before school begins and return at the end of the school year or semester.
Each student is fully insured, brings his or her own personal spending money and expects to contribute to his or her share of household responsibilities, as well as being included in typical family activities.
Families can choose their students from a variety of backgrounds, nationalities and personal interests.

Scholarship available through P.E.O. chapter
The educational scholarship sponsored by P.E.O. (Philanthropic Educational Organization) Chapter BR is available to any local graduating senior girl who has shown academic promise and leadership potential, has served her community and has at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA.
Any applicant attending a trade school, community college or university is eligible for consideration.
This $500 scholarship is available to applicants by contacting a high school counselor or emailing rosten_b@fortlewis.edu.
Bayfield learning center announces new classes
The Pine River Community Learning Center will offer these classes:
Learn to knit from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. today, March 19 and March 26 at the Bayfield center, 54 Mill St. Participants will learn the basic knit and purl stitches, increases, decreases and how to follow a pattern. This class is taught by Rob Matyska who has been knitting and crocheting for many years. The price is $40. Participants must register today.
People can learn how to budget, understand credit card debt and how to save money to avoid living paycheck to paycheck from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday and March 25. The class is $40. Participants must register by Tuesday.
An introductory class about Facebook will be held from 5 to 6:30 p.m. March 24. Privacy settings and why they are important will be discussed. This class is designed for people who are not on Facebook or have set up a profile and don’t know how to use it. The class is $40. Registration is needed before or on March 23.

Wheat Growers offer two $1,000 scholarships
The Colorado Association of Wheat Growers will award two $1,000 scholarships to Colorado high school seniors.
The applicants’ parents, grandparents or legal guardians must be current or new members of the association, or the applicant must be nominated by a current sponsor of the association.

One scholarship is funded by the association, and one is the “Friends of Wheat” scholarship, funded by donations in memory of several wheat supporters.
These scholarships will be awarded to graduating high school seniors planning to attend an accredited college, university, junior college or community college. Students intending to major in agriculture related fields are urged to apply.
Applicants must fill out and return the scholarship form no later than April 1. Two one-page essays are required. The recipients will be announced in May. The scholarships will be distributed in the summer of 2014.

Community college seeking comment on strategic plan
Southwest Colorado Community College will conduct Conversations Days this month to give its students, instructors, staff members and community members an opportunity to comment on the college’s strategic plan.
Specifically, people attending will be able to provide ideas about what strategies the college should focus on between now and June 30, 2015, to fulfill its strategic plan.
Conversation Days will be held from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Durango conference room and from noon to 1:30 p.m. March 19 at the Mancos/Cortez Learning Center.

Big Brothers, Sisters seek student mentors
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest Colorado is looking for high school students in Durango to volunteer as mentors to elementary school students for the 2014-15 school year.
Young people can be a positive role models for children while earning community service hours.

Advanced Earth science students participated in the Siemen’s Corp. “We Can Change” scholarship challenge. They designed and executed an original scientific study that explored sustainable solutions to Colorado coal mine waste revegetation. “Wine Tasting: Bubbles” with Alan Cuenca will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today. Participants will learn the differences between Prosecco, Cava, Champagne, Blanc de Blanc, Blanc de Noir and more. The cost is $39 and includes wine and snacks.
“Casual Geology of the Four Corners Area: Understanding Your Landscapes” taught by Jeff Brame will take place Tuesday and Thursday evenings from Tuesday to April 10. Students will learn the basic geologic processes responsible for creating landscapes. The cost is $199 for eight classes, including materials.

Homemaker guild offers scholarship
The Colorado Master Farm Homemaker Guild will offer a $500 scholarship to a Colorado woman with an agriculture background.
Known by the guild as the “Second Chance Scholarship,” it will be given to someone who has had her college education interrupted or postponed and is hoping to attend a college, trade school or a secondary education institution.
Homemakers are encouraged to apply. Requirements are: three names of reference, biographical statement of work history, community involvement, future goals and a statement about why the applicant deserves the scholarship. All applications must be returned by May 15. The award must be used in the year it is received.

Encaustics workshop to be held March 29
An encaustics workshop with Michael Billie will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 29 at Durango Arts Center, 802 East Second Ave.
Encaustic painting is a technique of painting with beeswax mixed a resin and pigments. In this introductory workshop, students will learn how to make their own wax mediums and mix colors and what materials are required to do so. Explorations using a hot box, embedding objects and fusing will all be covered.
A $10 materials fee is paid directly to the instructor on the day of the workshops. All skill levels including beginners are welcome. The cost is $120 for members and $150 for nonmembers.

Sunnyside to host St. Patrick’s Day event
Sunnyside Elementary School will host its annual St. Patrick’s Day Extravaganza from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday.
The event is sponsored by the Sunnyside Independent Parent/Teacher Association to raise funds that will help to pay for tablets for students.
The event will feature home-cooked corned beef or smoked brisket with all the sides, dance music, “Green Games” for kids and the Sunnyside Cake and Pie Auction.
Tickets are available at the door of the elementary school, 75 County Road 218. Dinner tickets are $10 for adults, $5 kids 6 to 12 years old and free to kids 5 and younger. Dinner will be served from 5 to 6:30 p.m. One $5 stamp will give kids a chance to play green games from 6:15 to 8 p.m.

DHS Theater to present ‘The Sound of Music’
The Durango High School Theater Department will present “The Sound of Music” at 7 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Destination Imagination to be held Saturday
Southwest Region Destination Imagination will be held Saturday at Durango High School.
Many Durango School District 9-R elementary schools will compete.
Spectators should check in at the front desk at DHS to find out where to go. People should arrive early before challenges begin. Once the doors are closed, people will not be able to enter.
The first challenge will begin at 8 a.m.
