Regional science fair needs judges March 3
San Juan BOCES will host the 58th annual San Juan Basin Regional Science Fair on March 3 at the La Plata County Fairgrounds, 2500 Main Ave.
Judges are needed to interview students and evaluate projects.

Students can apply for LPEA scholarships
The deadline for high school seniors to apply for scholarships and awards available through La Plata Electric Association is Tuesday.
Applications can be downloaded at www.lpea.coop.
All high school seniors in La Plata and Archuleta counties, including home-schooled students, who receive their electricity from LPEA, are eligible to apply for a variety of funding opportunities.
LPEA directly offers the LPEA Scholarship and LPEA/John Voelker Memorial Scholarship, plus it provides for additional affiliated rural electric scholarships and awards offered by Tri-State Generation and Transmission and Basin Electric Power Cooperative.
The co-op will award two four-year LPEA Scholarships (140 credit hours) for students attending any college or university beginning with the 2016-17 academic year. LPEA will cover tuition, books and fees, up to $28,000 over four years, as long as students maintain minimum qualifications.
The LPEA/John Voelker Memorial Scholarship supports two students attending accredited vocational schools, technical schools or junior colleges. This two-year scholarship covers fees, books, tools and supplies up to $10,000 over two years, per student.
Money for the LPEA and LPEA/John Voelker Memorial scholarships comes from LPEA’s unclaimed capital credits.

3 reappointments announced at FLC
Steve Short has been reappointed to the Fort Lewis College Board of Trustees. The reappointment became official after he was confirmed Feb. 16 by the Colorado Senate.
Short is a native of the Durango area, having worked at First National Bank of Durango since 1983. He took on the role of president of First National in 2000 and later became the bank’s chairman of the board.
His new appointment to the Board of Trustees will run through December 2019.
In addition to Short, FLC Senior Corporate & Foundation Officer Doug Lyon was reappointed to the CollegeInvest Board of Directors.
CollegeInvest is a division of the Colorado Department of Higher Education that helps students with financial planning and offers special 529 college savings plans.
Durangoan John Anderson was also reappointed as a commissioner for the Colorado Commission on Higher Education.
Anderson is a member of the Professional Associates for Fort Lewis College, the former president and CEO of New American Schools and a partner with the education consulting group Schoolhouse Partners.
Know Your Dough to host two upcoming programs
Know Your Dough, a nonprofit organization teaching financial literacy, announces these programs:
A program for seventh-graders will take place from Monday to March 4 at Escalante Middle School, 141 Baker Lane.
A financial wellness program will be held for fourth-graders at Fort Lewis Elementary School the week of March 7.
These programs are linked to the Colorado academic standards for personal finances, which are included in state-mandated assessments.

Mountain Middle School enrollment open to Feb. 29
Enrollment for next year’s sixth, seventh and eighth grades at Mountain Middle School is open through Feb. 29.
The lottery will be held March 2.

The Life-Long Learning Lecture Series at Fort Lewis College will present “Advice from the Garage: Masculinity Re-examined” at 7 p.m. Thursday in Noble Hall, Room 130.

Big Picture High School to hold information night
Durango Big Picture High School will hold an information night for parents/guardian and students interested in fall 2016 registration.
The session will take place at 6 p.m. Thursday at the school, 215 East 12th Street.
Principal Alain Henry will give an overview of the program. Participants will meet staff members and current students.
Sunnyside to host St. Patrick’s Day party
The annual St. Patrick’s Day Extravaganza will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. March 12 at Sunnyside Elementary School, 75 County Road 218.
Dinner will takes place from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 students and free to kids 5 and younger.
Tickets to Leprechaun Land, which gives kids games to play, will be $5.

Durango School District 9-R is seeking community comments about its 2016-17 budget.
The next community budget sessions are scheduled for 6-8 p.m. March 15 at Escalante Middle School, 141 Baker Lane, and 6-8 p.m. March 17 at Miller Middle School, 2608 Junction St.
Spring sports to begin at Durango High School
Durango High School spring sports officially begin Monday.
Springs sports include: baseball, boys swimming, girls golf, girls soccer, girls tennis, boys and girls lacrosse and boys and girls track.
All athletic paperwork must be on file no later than Friday in the activity director’s office.
Pre-season workouts are underway for some sports. These workouts are not mandatory. They are not a requirement for making a team in the spring. Attendance at these workouts is not a guarantee of making a team.
The spring sports mandatory meeting will be held for all athletes, parents and coaches at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the DHS Main Gym followed by short meetings for each sport.

Student-led Conferences will be held after school Wednesday. SLCs are individually scheduled and required for all ninth- and 10th-grade students, and juniors who are not in good academic standing or who have not completed all preparation for their LINK internships.
